Walking Therein

Parties, Friends, Dresses, Horses, Chicks, Puppies, and a New Midwife...

Life as a homeschooling family is never dull, to be sure. I am thankful for the freedom to live in God's plans and design for our family. So, in addition to daily home responsibilities, biology, arithmetic, algebra, reading, writing, and course planning, here are some other ways we are learning real life: Living Learning Moments.
Parties, friends and dresses: After having been invited to Coie's and Ryann's '1800's' Birthday Party-Dance, our girls have been scouring the airline and bus sites, trying to plan a trip down there. They even checked into train schedules. They have considered our family who travel, wondering if they could 'hitch' a ride - anything to get them there. It's about 8 hrs. from here, and I didn't really think we could swing it, so that wasn't an option initially.
In addition to trying to come up with a plan, they have been working at the neighbor's, cleaning his house, picking things up and fixing things around his yard/shop. They have each ordered Pride & Prejudice-style dresses (Amanda , Jocelyn and Rachel) from their friend, Brielle, with money they earned. This morning, we spent some time on Crystal's Biblical Womanhood site, looking at patterns. I forgot she had them there - and now, she is having a big SALE ON EVERYTHING! Glad I'm on her email list! From there, we went to Sense and Sensibility.  This is Jennie Chancey's (Ladies Against Feminism) sewing patterns site. It has been a wonderful time of discussion about history and modesty and being a woman.
Horses, Chicks, Goats, Puppies: We have a new puppy you can read about at Amanda's blog. She also has a couple of pictures of the little darling. No name yet, but we've got pictures!  We are also going to be getting 2 new fillies next month. WOW. God is awesome. I am amazed at how He weaves things into our lives we never expected. You can read about the sorrel and appaloosa yearlings in the same post.
So now comes the interesting part: learning all about horses, working them in as we are expecting goat kids next month and building into the barn to accomodate all of these changes! I spent an hour last night looking at different info about barns, stalls and horse safety/care. I posed a question about Farm Animal Knowledge on my Homestead blog, and I was so happy to receive a PM from Jonash2004, chock-full of info on every animal I asked about! She is a gem!

A New Midwife...: I have also been relieved as God has shown me who to use as as our midwife for our home birth coming soon! That was something that was getting down to the wire, and God brought our former MW back at just the right time!

Amanda is taking a Constitutional Law class online through HSLDA and Michael Farris - well, Jocelyn is, too - but not enrolled in the class. I am excited to read her text book, and knowing how she -and Jocelyn - love history, it has been good. She is finding, though, that knowing facts about history, the Declaration, and founding fathers isn't the same as applying the Constitution to our daily lives. We love Early American History, but she has read some of the applications that our gov't applies liberally against the Constitution, and she is shocked and happy to be in this class!

Other than that, I am thrilled to get to meet HSB bloggers next month. How exciting! Reading Jen's and Gena's blogs is something I try to keep up on, so it will be fun to meet 'the women behind the blogs' and their families-as well as other HSB friends! -I'm not sure who of you are all going!  Jen and Geoff Ig have graciously offered their home for us to stay at when we go the the Birthday Dance. That will be something to behold: 16 of us all in one home for 3 days. I'm sure there will be stories to tell...
We contemplated going to the Barn Dance in November, but couldn't work it out, and God knew all along we would get the opportunity to go a few months later. The only thing I wish is that Matt could go too. He gets 3-day weekends every 6 weeks, and taking this time wouldn't work. So, he gets to stay home and keep Chloe and Heidi company! They'll be happy to be fed, though, huh?
As well as the 16hr. round-trip to TN, we hope to stop at my Dad's in southern IN for an evening. And... and... Paul and Gena will be speaking on Tuesday about 2hrs. away from here, and I would love to hear them each speak. So, do we go...??? Hmm. We can take our children; we'd have to take No Name, too. I guess we'll see.
    Isn't life exciting?

Thanks for the links! We will be checking the patterns out for sure. Stefanie would like to see a review on the ordered dresses! There was a similar party close by that we didn't have attire for, it would certainly be fun to dress up (for DD of course - wink)
