St. Valentine vs. Cupid… Cupid triumphs…

This post was written by Jocelyn, our 15yo daughter. She wrote this up for V-day and didn't want to be controversial on her blog, so I told her I wanted it posted on my blog, because I didn't really go into the history in the post I did on the 14th.

I don’t know if this post will make others mad or hurt anyone’s feelings but in this world of being politically correct, you can’t say anything without offending someone.

St. Valentine vs. Cupid… Cupid triumphs…

I was reading the Mystery of History 2, a really neat book. One of my favourite school subjects is definitely history. The revolution, the Middle Ages, and the 1800s are my favourite times. I was so excited the other day when ‘American Experience” had a documentary on John Adams!!

Just a few days ago I read about St. Valentine and since “Valentine’s Day’ just came, I thought I would share this essential information with you.
I have seen a few bloggers re-doing their blogs with hearts and love pictures because of St. Valentine’s. Our family, however, chooses not to acknowledge this holiday as it is celebrated today.
Many may argue that it’s about St. Valentine, a Christian Martyr in the Middle Ages, who was tortured and sentenced to death for his faith.  But it’s not.
Let me explain why we really have this holiday at all - Just around the time of Valentine’s death, February 14th AD. 269, the pagans celebrated their love festival, Lupercalia, which was to honour Juno, the supposed goddess of marriage, love, women. They also honoured Juno, the supposed god of nature.
During this time young men and women would draw a name out of a box for a sleeping partner. This festival also involved cupid, the god of love, and the son a venus. So to Christianize this pagan holiday, like Christmas, the Christians decided to celebrate the death of this beloved martyr.

-------------------------------------------------------
In the Mystery of History the author writes, “Christians didn’t believe in the roman god/dess that surrounded them so Pope Gelasius decided to declare February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day to replace the pagan festival, just as they did with Halloween. Was the Pope successful? Did he change Roman tradition? I imagine that for centuries Christians spent time remembering St. Valentine and praying for the Saints that were martyred as well. But almost 2000 years later one trip to the drug store will tell you different. Instead of remembering St. Valentine, we are bombarded with cards, love, and flowers. Cupid is just about everywhere!
It’s not bad to express love or friendship but it’s a shame that St. Valentine, as a martyr, isn’t better remembered for what he and 100s-others had to endure”

-------------------------------------------------------

Now after reading that let me ask – “When was the last time you saw anything in the past few weeks about a martyred saint? Since Valentine’s Day is coming? I haven’t seen anything and it’s probably ‘offensive’ to most Americans today because it has something to do with Christ and the Bible.

Why do we need another holiday? It has nothing to do with Christ, at least not now. It’s the same thing with St. Patrick’s Day, which is also, supposedly, about a saint. Today that holiday is all about wearing green and being ‘lucky’, which is totally against the Bible because only God can ordain our lives, it has nothing to do with luck… luck is a part of witchcraft in the jist of things.

I think we as Christians (Followers of Christ) have indulged ourselves long enough and we need to get out of the habit of doing what’s the ‘American Way’ because we live here. We need to separate ourselves from these pagan traditions.

And all Mom can say to that (especially that last thought) is - AMEN!!!!

Be Blessed!
Jacque
