Movie Review: One Night With The King

First, let me PRAISE GOD that He protected Caleb as he ventured outside by himself in the freezing cold snow.
Amanda blogged it:
An All Watching God
.

Onto the Review:
It is a great blessing to watch a movie based on Biblical events and have your children know whether it is Biblical or fictional. It is the same type of feedback I hear when we watch a movie based on a fictional book, and they like it or dislike it based on how accurate it is to the storyline. To me, though, there is a vast difference in taking liberty with a fictional book authored by man/woman and taking liberty with the Bible, the Word of God.
So, here is my opinion of One Night With the King:
In addition to the fact that the Biblical King was a very masculine, controlling King the movie made King Ahaseurus look like the man society would portray today: an emotional, unsure-of-himself wimp. His strength and kingly authority was displayed a few times, but, he seemed to be ruled by his fear of what others thought of him and easily-manipulated by everyone. It wasn't a portrayal of his seeking counsel, but rather he being shamed into his actions.
Hadassah was first introduced as a spoiled, self-absorbed, manipulative teen-like girl, which was so disappointing. She was not portrayed as the noble, obedient giving child of God, I have read her to be and seen portrayed in other videos of the Esther story. She also displayed a coy, disrespectful and "in-charge" (feminist) side, and they gave her a boyfriend in the story.
Haman was given priority in the Biblical account of Saul and his disobedience in 1 Samuel 15 when he (Saul) saves Agag and some of his flock, disobeying God's direct command. I have no idea of 'historical accuracy' of Haman and Agag, but it played way too much into the storyline. Yes, it was a dramatic inclusion, but, YUCK... c'mon, let's give God's Word as written, you know? At least in the same context, not a fairy-tale-like-one. I am all for writing a story or making a movie historically-accurate and including the proper dress and culture of the times, but this turned God's lesson of Obedience is better than sacrifice and Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft into Haman's personal history of vengeance.
I guess the explanation for all of the errors was in the credits as it revealed it was not based on the Biblical account at all, but a fictional story by a "christian" author. It nauseates me that this book (as well as the movie) was being sold in Christian bookstores, as our children learn all about Hollywood's and the world's version of a glamorized Bible story. IS GOD's ACCOUNT NOT GOOD ENOUGH??
Also, I have seen Peter O’Toole interviewed 3-4x in the past month, and was very unimpressed that he was chosen to play Samuel the prophet. His comments in interviews about his desire to -and ability to- out-do younger men than himself in the ‘party-going’ arena kinda’ makes me ill thinking he was chosen to play such a prophet of the Most High God. He is a great actor by the world’s standards, I’m sure, but “there’s no accounting for taste”!
Maybe I would have enjoyed the movie if I didn’t know my Bible and didn’t feel it is important not to interject our own or society’s opinions into it. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to like this movie after reading the 'backside' of the case, but I cannot recommend you not see it enough.
So, *someone* in our family learrned the hard way to rent- before-you-buy... not mentioning any names...

for the review. I saw that at blockbuster and considered renting, but I was afraid of exactly what you wrote. We are going to see Star Queen, a musical about Esther, this week. I've heard it is fabulous.

No, I checked Jocelyn's blog, she diden't have any pop-ups. I think that the problem was from Amanda's side bar items. What I think you should do is re-create her blog from scratch and then add back the side bar items. It should clear up the problem.

I was disappointed too!

I had hoped this would be a good movie for our girls to watch to give them a idea of Hadassah/Esther's life and I am so glad I previewed this first before letting them watch this. I thought the movie was poorly done on several levels even though a big marketing campaign circulated among various churches and so forth. I was disappointed in the movie. I thought the acting was poor and that it departed from the Scriptural account. So this is one that I would not recommend to family or friends. I think I will blog about this later...

Blessings to you,
Sharra
