Poetry Assignment: Haiku Contest
As I was walking up to the house from the barn yesterday morning, I, for some strange reason, got poetic and started to think of 'descriptions' of the snow - ice - slush I was walking through.
I decided that we were actually going to spend a few minutes writing out some 'descriptive words' - or poetry - about the snow, the goats or the horses, their choice.
And, lo and behold, on Serving the King of King's blog, I find a link to a Poetry Contest to write a Haiku... well, there you go. So, we are all going to be writing Haikus for this contest as a writing assignment.
Haiku, as explained by 4evrHischild:
(art of Japanese Poetry). It is a very simple poem to write. It doesn't have to rhyme and it only contains three lines. The first line consists of 5 syllables, the second seven syllables and the third five syllables. Just choose a topic, and describe it in as few syllables as you can.
I got to talk to Eric about syllables as we were waiting for Jocelyn and Isaac to come out of the Library and P.O. Isn't homeschooling wonderful?? Today he sat as I worked and made a list of words he could use to describe the 3 things he has experienced this winter: goat kids, snow and horses.
He came up with all of the words himself, and we counted the syllables and he chose what to write. He was happy we posted his Haiku on his blog today.
Hannah and I also sat down and talked about poems, syllables and winter words. She did very good, as she came up with a whole sentence about playing in the snow that had 6 syllables! We found a word to add and made it her 2nd line. She really wanted to participate too, and had fun.
We posted hers on the Girls' blog.
Amanda has one written, but plans to post it on Wed. I think I'll let her do it tonight. Jocelyn and Rachel are working in theirs.
So, do a poetry lesson today and enter the contest at the same time!

the Veggie Tales movie "The Sumo of the Opera!" LOL
I should see if they remember what Haiku is, and more to the point, if they would be willing to write some. ;~)
BTW, I like the new look of the blog, plus it loads WAY faster on my dinosaur dial-up now. 8~D
Blessings,
Kym

I'm so glad you were able to use my contest in your schooling. That really is the reason I posted it. I've always loved writing and it's been a chore to get my kids to write so I've been trying to come up with fun ways to encourage them to put their ideas and thoughts onto paper, I thought this would be an easy assignment as it is short and really anyone can think of words that describe what they see, or feel or think.

Just stopping by to say that I recruted your daughters for the next issue of the Girlhood. They should have their entrys in by may 1st. Jocelyn is writing about goats and maybe about old hair styles. I'm not sure if your other daughters are doing anything, the subject of the issue is "taking responsibility" so I could see the goat article being based around that. Oh and I forgot to tell Superangel that her pop-up is back on her blog.
