Ephesians 6:1-4I went into Eric's room yesterday morning to wake him, only to find his Daddy's headphones and cd player around his neck. A moment of panic? Yes. -Followed by waking him up and removing them from him. I could tell by looking at them that they weren't tight, but that really wasn't the point, was it? I let him go to the bathroom and then called him into the family room to talk to him about it. Now, we have taught our children that God specifically used the terms of children obeying in reference to a long life for a reason. It's not because we are going to take them out to the front gate and stone them, but rather, that parents are given authority by God to protect them from harmful things they cannot quite comprehend as they grow up and need to be taught and obey. I asked if he had permission to use the headphones whenever he wanted to. NO. Ok, how about going to bed with them? No. And I told him about God's protection. I told him about how we as parents are to protect him, etc. I told him we live in a sinful world, and we live with the consequences of sin, even if we aren't in sin. I told him about sickness, accidents, certain tragedy, etc. I told him that even God's people experience tragedy and sometimes death before their time. Satan wants him. Not only is he a Believer, but he is the firstborn son in our family. Satan wants him. Satan wants him to disobey and be out of our protection and the protection of God. I reminded him of God's Word to obey your parents in the Lord that you may live long upon the earth. It's as simple as that. Obey your parents, whether they see you or not. Obey your parents whehter you want to or not. Obey your parents, even if you think your way is better. Obey your parents, even if you think they are wrong. Not if they are causing you to sin, but if you just think they are wrong. Colossians 3:20-21 We have discussed this aspect of the verse with our older children. God knew that some children would be smarter or more educated than their parents. He knew that parents would make mistakes and even be wrong in their decisions sometimes!! Imagine that! Those points do not change the Scripture. Now, of course, I am not talking about obeying into sin. That would not be obeying as unto the Lord, would it? I am talking about chucking your own opinion about the matter and doing what you are told, 'because this is right'. We must also set the example. As children of the Most High God, we are also called to obey. We are called to a higher purpose. We are called to learn and live God's Word and teach them how. The bar is high, but we can attain it, step by step. We must teach our children to obey, *especially* when we aren't looking. We can only do this by living the bible *even when we think no one is looking*. That is obeying as unto the Lord. They listen and obey our word out of obedience to God's Word. Sometimes it is inconvenient to teach our children or correct our children. Remember: if it is trained into their character and made habit to obey, it will be easier for them to grasp the concept of obeying an Almighty God and the consequences of sin and disobedience. But we must take the time! Are we raising mindless, brain-washed children? Um, no. We are raising confident, loving, obedient children who will have far more maturity than if they decide to go their own ways. We are raising children with a purpose. A higher purpose. Be Blessed!
