Balancing Life

2:47 PM, Thursday, April 26, 2007 .. Posted in Seeking Rest in Heart and Home .. 10 comments .. Link
So much to do, so little time to blog. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Wouldn't it be nice to blog everyday, read all of your friends' blogs and just generally spend mucho time in blogland with your online friends??
Problem for the Dixon's is: we have dial-up... it would take me forever to even read a few blogs and post a few posts.
[Ok, I'm kidding myself... I haven't had the brain power to enthrall and wow a monkey for a couple of weeks now. Let's face it... if you're not mad at me and even still reading, I haven't even had enough brain power to make a definite decision on my dear little darling's name!!]
When we started blogging, we really had to rein ourselves in on our time. It can quickly take over your time, your thought life and just keep you away from so many important things. I know this, because I have had to do this with things like time with friends, scrapbooking, church activities and ministries... to name a few. Lately, I haven't had time to worry about such things.
There is truly much to do when you are a homeschooling family of 10 with a newborn, when Daddy doesn't usually get home until after 7, a garden to till and plant, horses to train, goats to milk, an addition to finish... sound familiar? So much to do that I have little guilt, if any, about not talking on the phone and spending times with friends, scrapbooking, and other activities that many consider daily things to do. Though I do long for friendships at times...
[If you get The Old Schoolhouse magazine, there's just the article to read on seasons of friendships on p.40.  If you don't get the mag, get it. There are many many articles written by wonderful homeschoolers that you will want to read in addition to this one.]
I did get to spend time yesterday with a friend I hadn't talked to in a couple of months. I really enjoyed spending a few unexpected hours with her and 4 of her 5 children. She has had a couple of rough weeks, and I had been thinking about her, so I was happy to be able to talk for a bit. Coupling that with having the Suarez family and my Mom and Dee come last week, I have come to realize that one has to watch life to not swing the pendulum to the opposite side, too.
We have to balance between something "consuming life" and life consuming everything else. When that happens, I think that is when we start to live from our feelings and lose sight of what the Good Lord has for us. It can happen in a marriage, with family, with friends...in your homeschooling.
It can turn one's focus inward and away from God real quick. When that happens, it is not a pretty sight of any of us.
Still know what I'm talking about?
I personally know that it's easy to get wrapped up in my own little life. In avoiding a life I don't desire, even. But, thankfully I serve a God who cares about me, and I have a family ever before my eyes and pressing onto my heart to make the right choices. To turn my eyes away from myself and not be bitter or unloving or unkind. To press on toward the high calling of a wife to a weary husband, a mom dedicated to homeschool and set a Godly example for these precious blessings I do not deserve to train, to be an encouraging and loving daughter, sister and friend to those who desire it.
How can I do all of this? I don't know.
Why do I get comments from you who encourage me, telling me I am an encouragement to you? I don't know.
All I do know is what I have already stated: I serve a God who cares about me, and I have a family ever before my eyes and pressing onto my heart to make the right choices. That is what I know, and that is what spurs me on to serve Him and those He has given me.
I am thankful that He has found this a time to bring new friends into my life. Over the past few weeks and months, I have met several wonderful homeschool moms/families in town and by email. God knows how to balance our lives, and His timing is perfect in all things.

Blessings!
-Jacque

Hey girl! I was just dropping by to say hello! I do know what you are talking about. I have dial up too! Yes...oh the wait! Then the disconnections or timeouts or bad gateways and on and on! Well, I can't wait to have 8 children, but with 2 little ones and one on the way, I still find myself busy. I am fairly new to blogging and you're right. It's a lot of fun...could EASILY take up a day if you let it. In fact, I am spending more time on here today than I should. I do try to post an entry each day, mainly because I have found it to be a great way to journal! I enjoy doing it and just copy off a print of the entry and add it to a little binder. I thought maybe the kiddos would enjoy reading about when they were young later! Well, today, I was just trying to visit a few people I haven't talked to in a while. So, hello! Good to hear from you! You're right. God is perfect and knows just what we need! Enjoy your day with your beautiful children.

Charity

Balance really is the thing, isn't it? Seeking first the kingdom of God, abiding in Christ, ministering in your family to those He has given you and to those outside the family that He brings to you in one way or another. And yet don't over do it and wear yourself out unnecessarily. Laugh, have a little fun, enjoy the sunshine and all that He has given you. God's grace is sufficient and so you start where you are (does that make any sense?). And "if the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that..."

Thanks for a great post!

Chris

That's true, you do need to watch out how much time you spend on the computer. For me though, a bunch of my education is online. Lets see, I have writing, all of my blogs, math, life skills, my business, and a lot more.

I still think that it would be really fun to just take the computer and stick it somewhere where I couldn't get on it, or move to a place with no electricity. It would be really interesting to see what life without technology would be like. I think I would like to do that someday.

The main reason why I stopped by your blog is to tell you not to name the pixie Lillie, if you put the name together, Lilly Dixon doesn't sound good. At least that what I think Lucy, or Lucie would be much better. Lol, do you have any other names?

I also meant to mention that my husband is making a goat milking stand so it looks like someone will be milking. I know I can't commit to it during this seson of my life but I am excited to think of one day getting more involved. Right now I tend to the children and the home that is the best I can do.

This was a wonderful post, Jacque, and an encouragement to me. Life has surely become hectic here as well. The focus toward Christ is where I aim to be.... if that is what we seek, everything else will fall into place. That is the beauty of a life filled with the love of Christ!

Ok, I do have to admit, I do think of blog entries when I mow. I know that it's good for my body and everything, but if you or Eric want to come and mow our lawn, then I would be glad to let you! I also love to sing, but it's not really possible well pushing the mower, did I mention that there is no self propelled on this mower? Lol!

That is true, I've never really thought of that! She won't be Pixie Muffin Dixon for the rest of her life!

So this is a normal procedure? You usually take longer for boys?

Thanks for the compliment, I really try to keep my post biblicly sound, as non christiains do probably get on my blog.

Eric

P.S. Time to get the Pixie on your side bar!
