Scrapbooking, Notebooking and The HOW Approach

For the past 5 months, we have used an eclectic, unschooling approach for our learning. I like to refer to these moments as Living Learning Moments. That's my term of endearment for learning by living and applying what we know, need to know or are in the process of learning.  I love to learn this way; it beats what we started doing: sitting at the desks for hours, doing workbook pages. There is another method of homeschooling I prefer: The Heart of Wisdom Approach.

We started using HOW last year around September, notebooking our Daily Bible Reading and then in December, we had so much we had to get done around here that the work became the lessons and the teaching time!! I don't at all think that is bad, it just isn't the HOW approach, which I truly believe in.
I read the Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach by Robin Sampson last year, and I hope to get back into scrapbooking our Bible lessons as soon as the garden is planted. I am going to be purchasing the History Through the Ages Creation to Christ Timeline Figures to use in our scrapbooks. It will be a lot easier than having them draw everything. They don't mind doing that a bit, but it moves along smoother if there are some already-drawn figures. I also already have some sheets of characters I can copy for them to color in our Adam to Abraham HOW Unit Study.
I have to tell you that HOW is a solid teaching method. Ok, it is solid, if you prefer a curriculum based on the WORD of God. It actually combines several teaching methods and covers each type of learning style.

The basic learning application of this method, notebooking or scrapbooking, is used by many of the accepted, popular methods of home teaching. Outside of actual hands-on learning (which is what we have been doing around our homestead), Notebooking or scrapbooking is the best way to allow a child to experience something and retain that understanding and knowledge of the subject. That, in conjunction with Child-Directed learning, will allow what they learn to stick to a child's knowledge tank and help him as he builds on it again and again.

After looking at websites and trying to grasp the idea of scrapbooking, lapbooking and notebooking for about 3 years, I finally think I understand the concept.  I began to grasp it as I read through HOWTA and the HOW site. I found another site also, so I want to share the links and a little about them with you. If you have ever been interested in scrapbooking for school, you will want to peruse these sites...

Creating a Time Line Book

"In her writings, Charlotte Mason recommended preparing a handmade Time Line Book (originally called a Museum Sketch Book; sometimes called a Book of the Centuries). This activity is based upon one of the major keys to motivation: the active involvement of students in their own learning. Students learn by doing, making, writing, designing, creating, and solving. Creating this Time Line Book is a marvelous way for students to not only be actively involved but to “pull it all together” and grasp the flow of biblical and historical events."

Scrapbooking to Learn also has many, many other Scrapbooking/Notebooking ideas, besides the Timeline.

Another site I found is In the Hands of a Child.

"In the Hands of a Child brings the excitement of hands-on learning to life with Project Packs and Research Packs for students of all ages. Each of the completed projects fits neatly into a file folder; storage is simple and the projects become wonderful keepsakes with an educational value. Children retain more when what they learn belongs to them. Project Packs and Research Packs fulfill that need for ownership of knowledge.

This is a great educational value for both classrooms and homeschools. Project and Research Packs bring laughter and learning together In the Hands of a Child."

You have surely visited the Cindy Rushton ~ Lapbooking Queen's ~ site.  She blogs right here at HSB.   Visit her blog to link to the many sites she has to share her lapbooking experiences.
