My Firstborn Son is 10 Today!

Well, here we all sit in the living room watching Black Stallion Returns. It's

~~Happy Birthday, ERIC!!!

I LOVE YOU!!!~~

and I told him he could watch a movie he selected. He asks just about everyday to watch something, so I thought I might say yes and make it 1 in, oh, say, a *million*.

He helped me yesterday in the garden, along with most everyone else (Amanda was in the house holding LucyLillie. It's nice to have a big strong boy around all day to do the "man's work" while Daddy is at work. Amanda and Jocelyn are probably thankful that he can do it, too, since they used to be the ones who did it for or with me! It's amazing the change between ages 8 and 9 in a boy, as far as helping do heavy lifting and responsibility.

I mentioned on his blog about his handwriting. I was so surprised at how much improved he is! It'd like all-the-sudden I can read it! I think he was surprised himself. At least now, I think it will be a good time to get him going on copywork more. He reads his Bible- a Proverb in the morning and a Psalm at night before bedtime, and now he can copy them, too.

We are working on the whole work ethic thing with him. He is a very helpful young man when he wants to be, and I am trying to get him to understand that his helpful attitude must extend to when he *doesn't want to be* too!!

Ex. Last night at dinner, Hannie asked him to please get her a glass of water for dinner, after he had just gotten her a tray. His (ungentleman-like) reply was something about her not being a Queen. UGH!
So, I asked him if he thought he should treat her like a queen... or any young lady, for that matter... and he, of course, said yes, in that context. So, to follow from there, he decided he *should* treat her like a Queen. I asked him if he wanted to be treated like a King...lol what a silly question. And, to my delight and surprise, instead of jumping all over that one, he said, "You know, Mom, I really haven't heard that as much lately as I used to." I asked him what he meant, and he said, " The treat others like you want to be treated...."

Wow! He got it! He got the connection. We used that quite a bit on a daily basis last year. I guess we can start repeating the Golden Rule again, then, huh?

So, Eric is becoming a great young man, and we will continue to keep up the work! He does enjoy any kind of work when he has someone to do it with. I guess that is probably more personality. Though I would *love* to have help in the garden (like yesterday), I really enjoy being out by myself working. Jocelyn doesn't mind it either. Eric *did* go out and till the garden last week several different times alone. Man and Machine... what's *not* to love?

On a totally different topic... please be praying for us... If you have never read Seeking Rest on the Homestead, on which I post more family "stuff", you may not know I have struggled with this feeling of being closer to family in NM. DH wasn't at a place where he would entertain the idea then, though. At this point, he may. So, when he starts looking at maps and having Amanda look up if Lowe's is located here or there... it's time to pray.

He sounds like he's becoming a fine young man. And with all those sisters, he'll have plenty of practice becoming a gentleman. ;-)
