Blogging to Learn: Writing and Dicatation
Journal , narrating, and dictation are a invaluable tools to homeschool families. Eric had what I thought was a bad habit of always having to tell me every single little detail about every chapter of each book he read. The LORD showed me one day that this is Eric's way of narrating the story back to me.
You may think about journaling and ask "When am I going to have time to do it?" and "How do I get them to do it?". One way we have done this is through blogging. Blogging is a great way to keep a journal. It is also a great way to practice communicating with others, and sometimes with those who have a dissenting opinion!
If you have a younger child, it is a good thing to have younger children dictate their journal entries to you, until they can write it by themselves. Another idea is to use those dictations that you copied for their penmanship or copywork, if they are physically mature enough. A lot of times it is just easier for a young child to orally dictate a story to you rather than taking the time it takes to write it down because as they write they may forget things they wouldn't forget if they were telling you.
As far as the When? question, I would say, when you want to. We do things we think are important when we want to to fit them in. I know I do. Is it important to you for your child to journal? Is it important for your child to become a better writer? If it is, then journaling is a great way to get them to be a better writer. Blogging is a fun way to journal and grow in their writing. They can recount things that happen in a way to 'visually' record their words as a story. Things that happen in their lives that make sense to them. Things they are familiar with. It makes their life as it is important to them.
I am so glad that Rachel keeps up a journal every night before she goes to bed. I think about how many journals I have started and never kept up. I think of all the cute things I wanted to remember that I don't because I didn't used to write things down. I am so thankful for our photo albums. There are so many wonderful things recorded in them: pictures and journaling.
I am glad that I have learned to jot things down when I think of them. If I can only write down a few things and add to it later, I am happy I did it, and the memory didn't pass me by. The answer to, "When will I be able to find the time to journal with my children?" Right now. Or later or tomorrow. Integrate it into reading, or writing, or even into history. Somehow, we can fit the ideas and real-life moments into our everyday learning. Isn't that what we were called to do? To talk with them and walk with them ... to teach them using the Word, which is God's real-life lessons for us and our good?
He gave us these lives. Let's use them to teach our children how good our lives are.
Blessings!
