Independence Day and History in Our Own Lives
I left a comment on the 4th of July post on Sprittibee's blog, and it got me remembering about the album Amanda made.
Anyway, as my comment said, I *have* been very blessed for my children to have a relationship with my grandpa, who served in WWII. Amanda got to do his service album a few months back and presented it to him on his anniversary. It was so touching to see him go through it and totally appreciate all of her hard work.
I am so thankful that God has allowed us this time with my Grandparents. Jocelyn has found a special place in Grandma's heart, but I think now, as her heart has softened, she has a special place in her heart for our family. Not that she didn't before, but it was different. Now she has an affection for our children that hasn't been there before, perhaps ever for anyone.
I think of them often, though I don't think to call them enough. I need to do that. Usually Jocelyn asks to call and check up on them... or Amanda. I am thankful that the generation gap has been closed, and our children think it's "cool" to know and love Great-Grandpa and Grandma and they think highly of our children, and miss them when they don't see them.
We watch war movies regularly, and really love the America we can be proud of (though I don't know that she still exists). We watched "National Treasure" today, as a part of our American History Unit Study and afterward, Eric got out one of the old - very old - war "encyclopedias" we got from my Grandfather. I'm glad we can learn history that way: because we are interested in it, not because we have to hear about some old boring facts, dissected from other things in history.
It thrills my heart to see my children pick up a book or draw something or ask facts about something just because we were doing something that interested them.
Thank God for my grandparents who have sparked an interest in my children in so many ways, from history to art to evangelism to just plain good ole hospitality and love. I think I will call them tomorrow and let them know that.
Blessings! - Jacque

I also love to teach my children history. I think they really like it too. Funny... when I was in school I thought history was hard and boring, but not any longer! It is alive and rich with lessons for the past and the present... maybe even for the future!
