NEW- Tell Me About Your Homeschool Tag - Meme
Monday, July 23, 2007

Ok, I was tagged about a dozen times with the 8 Random Things About Me tag, and I usually hate doing tags, because I hate reading tags on other blogs. But I like learning things about you all, so the 8 Random Things tag I don't mind doing or reading. I also don't mind reading the one that was going around about the books, because it was informational. That got me thinking about finding out about people through tags, and since we are all either already gearing up for homeschool or will soon, I made up a tag.... and I'd like to just say:TAG, You're it, but that doesn't usually work

So, since I have to, I tag: Christine Read, Tia, Quietcajun, Christy, Sprittibee, Jill Novak and Amber with it, and Anyone who comes from the Carnival of Homeschooling.

I started homeschooling (years ago or year)

when Amanda was 3. That was in 1993. 14 years ago. Wow. I didn't actually 'homeschool' her then, but that's when we considered ourselves homeschoolers.

I homeschool __ of my children

All of our children - from birth. ;) We have 8, and 5 of them do actual written work 2 of the others learn by application.

I teach my children to read at age(specific age or not?)

I have done it both ways, at a specific age and when ready. I found *when ready* is more effective, and I don't spend time forcing it, and we aren't frustrated. My 7yo has been reading, self-taught, for over a year. My 2 oldest read by 6-7 and the next 2, our 3rd girl and 1st boy struggled at 7 and 8, starting to be frustrated and lack interest. I let them go... they EACH picked up a novel at age 9 and I haven't been able to keep them from disappearing into a room or a tree and melting into whatever book they are reading.

A few of my most favorite homeschool teaching resources are:

The Bible, The Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach, Educating the Wholehearted Child(for Littles) and A Home Designed Form-U-La

Do you write out goals for school each year?

UGH! No. Not yet. I don't think it is important to be crazy-bent on getting lists checked off, but I do think it is important to have goals and schedules to work by.

What time do you start school each day? Do you have a specific schedule?

We start around 9. It depends on where we are schooling. If school that day consists of something outside, we may clean up inside a bit first. We have a relaxed organized schedule. We schedule getting things done on certain days, but leave room for where the learning may go.

I have used ___ math programs. My favorite is:

2, A Beka and Saxon. Ok, well, 3 if you count al the math I do with everything around the house. My favorite is assigning something like, go add this change or figure out what change I would get back. I have made up my own worksheets before, detailed to that child. We built new horse stalls in the barn, and I had Rachel, Eric and Hannah doing math with measurements, etc. That was my favorite project.

I have used ___ science programs. My favorite is:

2, A Beka and Apologia. Though I don't count using Apologia as a program, becasue we used the textbook to read from. I prefer to read about science and incorporate programs on pbs, minus the evolution, etc. Of course, when we watch that, and the kids hear that, we get to discuss the origins and Creation too.

I have used ___ grammar/english programs. My favorite is:

several. We have used A Beka, Simply Grammar, Easy Grammar. I don't have a favorite. I think grammar is best learned by reading whole books and novels and hearing it spoken properly. I think the workbooks are just like tests to see if the child gets it.

I have used ___ history programs. My favorite is:

I bought A Beka history, but didn't really do more than read the texts. We did the same thing with Mystery of History. My favorite is making up a Unit Study and reading any history that correlates with that particular subject or era.

What months do you homeschool during?

We homeschool all year, day and night. It starts with Bible reading or breakfast and continues all through the day. It is not limited to or by books and workbooks, so it is also continued all year.

Favorite homeschool method?

LOL - the Dixon Method!! No, really, I love the Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach, and I have gotten so much good info and methods of teaching from it. I like it that is fits with several diferent methods of homeschooling. I really like the unit study approach, as well as Delight-directed.

Do you/plan to homeschool all the way through high school?

Yes, and we are. We have invested do much time ito our children, it only makes sense to share the fruit of our labors and continue to lead them as young adults. Besides, have you been in a public high school during school hours lately?

Have you noticed specific learning styles in each child?

When we first started, I didn't get this. Now, I do. I can see how diferent children have a bent to a specific learning style. I think homeschool students are more apt to learn in any situation, because they have the freedom to learn in the home.

Do you keep specific or general records? Or none, really?

I have specific records for some and general for all. We don't have to keep records here in IN, except for attendance, but I started a couple of years ago to go back and get records in place, as I have seen the importance in doing it.

Do you teach Bible, art, journaling, phys. ed.?

Yes to all. We do not have a specific time and day, except for the Bible. That we teach liberally, at any time applicable. We are journaling more since I read The Gift of Family Writing by Jill Novak. (You should get this book;it'll change your perspective on journaling and family memories. The others are occasional as time sees fit, because they always seem to work their way into our schooling.

Where do you like to shop for homeschool books and resources?

The Old Schoolhouse Store and Rainbow Resource. I used to use ebay, 'til the whole Teacher's Edition fiasco, and Homeschool Buy is a good place to look, too. Tami, who is hosting the Carnival of Homeschooling this week, had another suggestion: HER STORE!

What resources have you been itching to try?

I think this should be a different post! I would like to see the new astronomy curriculum, , and ...still working on this one... where did my list go??? Oh, here is some of it...

1. Classical Astronomy ~ Signs and Seasons

2. Rod and Staff English 4 Building With Diligence

3. Practical Accounting Fundamentals

4. Pilgrim's Progress, All-In-One Curriculum

5. The Young Man's Handybook ~ Preparing Your Son...

*Do you use and/or like to use E-books?*

I just started, and I'd like your opinion.

Do you have anything to add?

I hope that you will leave me a comment and let me know if you do this tag. I really love to glean what others know and are doing, because I think that is one of the best things about blogging in the homeschool community!

Blessings!

-Jacque

I don't like tags much because I hate having to actually NAME the people I'm tagging. LOL I'm getting started on lesson planning for our upcoming school year, so this tag is one I'd like to do - my answers will go up on my blog sometime today. But I won't tag anybody by name. LOL

Blessings,
Kym

A Couple of things:

First, thank you so much for helping me with my blog. I still cannot see those comments from a couple of the posts, but everything else seems to be working now. I don't think there was any rhyme or reason as to why it happened, but it appears to be fixed now.

Second, what does it mean to be "tagged". Being new to the blog world, how does this work?

Third, what is "Carnival of Homeschool"?

Thanks for the Education, Stephanie

Hi! Thanks for leaving a comment. I've been a lurker at your place for a while (via CoH)--you have a beautiful family and LucyLillie is a doll!

I enjoyed your tag post--I'm hoping to formally homeschool when they get older (as I'm already informally doing so now ;)!) and I've been reading homeschooling blogs since before they were born and before I was married trying to collect advice and get ideas. Thanks for yours!

Oh, and at 4 am I realized who the artist was that I was trying to remember over at Janine Cate's--I think it was Reuben!! I'll have to go research it as I think my information comes from reading fiction books and not from actually seeing his paintings. Learning moment?

Take care,
Steph

I really like ebooks. They fit our life. I can download instantly -- no waiting for packages. They can be stored on a CD - small, lightweight. I can print only what I need (little waste).

They are especially good for unit studies, projects. But an actual book? No. I have to print it out.

The scoop on me: Believer for 20 years; married 19 years; 8 children so far, hoping for more; live on a great hobby farm, with 7 goats, 2 dogs and 68 chickens. Oh, and 1 bathroom. That's always fun. :) The scoop on our homeschool: Bible-first, Living Learning Moments, meaning if it happens, it's a lesson. We learn life! How long have we been homeschooling? Well, our oldest is 18. How much longer do we have to go? Well, our youngest is almost 1. We love it and wouldn't have it any other way.

Jeremiah 6:16
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.
But they said, We will not walk therein.

HOMESCHOOLING
~Resources for Homeschoolers~

Keep their hearts. If you don't have their hearts, take note and re-capture their hearts!
Don't let the seeds sown by the ideal of today's youth culture ruin the glorious plans God has for your child.
Satan wants him. Your child is a jewel in Christ's crown, and satan wants him.
Train him as such.
You want him more. So does the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:1-13

1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
12 Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Exodus 20:1-17 The Ten Commandments

1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Matthew 6:7-13
The Lord's Prayer

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
