RSS FeedWhy is Finding Curriculum So Difficult?
Monday, August 6, 2007
Ok, I'm working on 2 hours of sleep here, so bear with me, lol.
I had a detailed, long post about a book I thought we might use for our science. I want to use something I can plan my own lessons out of, not really a textbook. I thought I'd found it, and when I went to post it today, I had a - call it a 'feeling' if you wish - I know it was the LORD...
Anyway, I just felt an urging to ask Gena about it, (since I've been bugging her since early am. When are you going to download Yahoo IM?) ;) So, I was going to blog all about it, and now, well, I GOT NUTTIN'. sigh.
(btw... Gena sent me here: Creation Ministries International)
I do have an old BJUP Biology book... I don't want to use biology again. We did that last year. I have an Apologia General Science book. I really wanted to do an in-depth study on creation and all of the facets of science. I wanted to cheat and throw a whole buncha' science in altogether!! I suppose I can use it as a reference and just allow God to guide me - gee, you think? - in His plan of creation and how science fits in. Speaking of "just allow God to guide me ", I do need to check in my Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach and see what science resources they list.
Why is it that every book - especially christian ones - have to be checked out and looked at behind the ministry and find out whether they are up-to-par biblically? I did some checking about 3-4 months ago into preterism, and then dominionism and reconstructionism came up and the ministries that believe in all of that... some I wholeheartedly supported previously. A lot of real ministries come under fire, and you find out it's just someone disagreeing with the Word, and then you find many who are all about the Bible on the surface, but when you research their beliefs and their ministries, you find out they haven't really expressed *everything* publicly that they believe.
I do not want to support ministries that I cannot in good faith present to my precious children on the whole Bible. I noticed I need to take some books off of my Library Thing on my sidebar, even! Now, please don't get all upset and leave me a comment saying I am being legalistic or I need to get off of my high horse. I truly do not feel like I am better than anyone or my standards are better... blah, blah, blah. I do not blog here about certain things that we have experienced within the Body ( I blog at Homestead about more personal schtuff). Really and truly... if we disagree about certain doctrines... it doesn't mean I don't love you in the LORD, it doesn't mean we need to break fellowship; it means that I will believe what I believe God is/has showing me in my life and his Word and you have that same freedom.
That being said... I will blog my beliefs on my blog. Period. It's great if we are like-minded, and we can have camaraderie about it. It's great if we aren't like-minded and can disagree and not discuss it to death and have camaraderie about it, too. Anything else, I am really too stretched for.
Ok... now that I've cleared that up, any eclectic-make-your -own-science- class-plans-up-to- fit-any-age- homeschool moms/ teachers out there with advice???
;) Can you tell things have been a bit rough around here? We are in the tail-end of finishing our addition, (still) planning for school this next year, all the usual work around the farm, and I found out my sis and her dh have resigned their positions as Worship Pastor/ Leaders yesterday. Not that that is a bad thing, mind you... I told her to check out AZ!! ;)
I have really enjoyed reading all of the plans and homeschool info everyone has given in answering my MEME.
Thanks! I know it has been an encouragement and a blessing to many homeschoolers all over blogworld! If you haven't seen it, check it out. Make sure to add your name to Mr. Linky if you do it!
Oh, and I read this post by PricelessPurity on my Friends list yesterday. It is A "Dedication" to All Bloggers Out There. If you are a Blogger, its worth your while to look it over. We have some great Kid Bloggers here at HSB!
blessings! -Jacque

Your blog caught my eye because my husband and I struggle with this same issue. Why can't we just be able to trust what goes on behind the scenes of a ministry? We lean a lot on Matthew 24 and Jesus' warning of false prophets. We lean a lot on prayer and listening to that "feeling." You sound like you have a great discerning heart. Stay strong in that.

I definitely agree that you need to be very careful with the spiritual materials you allow your children to read. You can't just assume that everything touted as "X" actually fits those beliefs. People can often twist Scripture to suit their own purposes. Sometimes it's well-meaning but flawed because they never received proper education on the Bible. Too often though it's a deliberate misinterpretation to promote a certain agenda. My mom's family is Episcopalian and that denomination is on the verge of schism over this issue- very sad!
