Random Tips - Unit Studies

This may just be a no-brainer for you truly organized people.

The last time I went through books as I prepared for our 4th of July study, I pulled all the books related to that topic and put them into a little basket so I didn't forget I had them as I planned. I have a habit of thinking of something really great, then totally forgetting it when it comes time to plan it!  This way, as I thought of projects or stories to use, I wrote down what I wanted to use and how, and I kept the books out I wanted to use and put the others back.  Putting all of the books and my notes in the one place helped me to keep all my thoughts in one place, so to speak.

Then, after the planning was done, I left all of the books we needed for that study and all the books I wanted the kids to read out where they were easily accessible (the middle of the living room floor for a few days!). This way we could reach into it to get a reading book or whatever to study.
This also works well if you have a book shelf to put all the books in one, easily-accessible place.  It was nice to have it in a basket, though, to transport it from room-to-room or even to take it outside or on a trip.

So, whether you are planning a unit study, you have a reading list you want completed or any kind of project, a large basket is a great, portable way to organize your thoughts and your homeschool!

That's a good idea; my mom will often do something kind of similar to that by going to the library and checking out a whole bunch of books on the subject that we're studying. We have a "library bench" rather than a basket. ;-) I'm sure you guys have plenty of excursions to the library as well.
Regards,
Sylvia

Hello Mother...

I actually did get a book or two out of there and read some to the littles. So it wasn’t a total loss.

Hi! Do you do a lot of unit studies? I can't seem to get the hang of them but I love the way they look...so am going to give it another try this year!
Thanks for the tip. Stopped in to say hello. Blessings, Theresa

I am glad this was a helpful tip for all of you.
Most of the studies we do are Unit Studies. When we study something, most of the time I had not made any sort of a plan. We actually just went from book to project to discussion to video for the study. Anything from that time period or that topic was a possibility.

Unfortunately, Sylvia, we do not really like our library. Five years ago, it was a nice little, small-town library, but since then, the new librarian has tried to expand and become more like a big-town library, and has set a lot of rules and such that has made it harder to use. We do use it occasionally, though.

I am trying to get a little more official with the unit studies and make up a plan. I also want to have a record of the resources we use and the different things we do so I can either repeat them or publish them!
Either way, I love the freedom unit studies gives us. I will be posting more on that.
