Know Your State Homeschool Laws

Do you know your state homeschool laws? For each grade? Do they differ? Some states have the same laws for each grade, so don't. Do you know what the homeschool laws in your state are? There are some very handy charts and .pdf files on HSLDA Homeschool Laws. There are 2 different pages per state. This page takes you to a map of the US. It has different colors for different genres of homeschool laws, according to their regulation level.
You will notice:
ACTION States requiring no notice: No state requirement for parents to initiate any contact.
ACTION
WATCH States with low regulation: State requires parental notification only.
ACTION
UPDATE States with moderate regulation: State requires parents to send notification, test scores, and/or professional evaluation of student progress.
ACTION
UPDATE State with high regulation: State requires parents to send notification or achievement test scores and/or professional evaluation, plus other requirements (e.g. curriculum approval by the state, teacher qualification of parents, or home visits by state officials).

If you look at a few other states than your own, you may notice things that your state does or does not have. Reading the Adobe .pdf in its entirety will help you understand your state chart better, too.

In the past year, as we have discussed a possible move, I have looked at about a dozen different state's homeschool laws. Some states have different laws for high school that are more strict as far as attendance, subjects, and who can teach than others are. Our state is not like that. It got me thinking because I have been so worried about meeting the state public high school requirements. As I looked closer, I realized that our state has no differentiation in its homeschool laws for lower grades and high school. When I looked again this week, I looked with fresh eyes and realized this. I felt so relieved.

Also, a few months ago, I received an IM from a total stranger who had decided to homeschool and had been told only one of the options in her state to homeschool. When I first spoke to her, she had already 'enrolled' her daughter in the 'program', even though she could have opted to homeschool herself with no program. They didn't tell her that. KNOW YOUR HOMESCHOOL LAWS!

If you are moving, learn about your new state's homeschool laws before you move so you will be prepared when you get there.

blessings!
Jacque

I cannot say how very important I think this is. Thank you for posting this. for those who live in highly regulated states, of course you will want to know so that you don't even inadvertantly (sp?) break thelaw. But for those of us who live in "good" states to homeschool (Texas is my state) it's important because sometimes school districts will ask things of you that are not required by law and therefore are breaching your rights.
I'm going to link you in one of my own posts.

We have CRAPPY homeschool laws but i would love to have your family move here anyways! :)

The Pittsburgh Area to be exact. :)

If I could get my entire family to move (relatives I do not want my kids missing out on growing up near) then I would love to pick a better state to live in!

Thanks for posting about the state laws. When my Wonderful Husband was looking for a new job, we were very in tune to this information. With each new recruiter who called with a job, I was looking up states to see what the homeschool requirements were. I am still doing that now with each call he continues to get! Old habits are hard to break. Not to mention the fact that a little knowledge is not bad to have!
