Walking Therein

Saturday, January 26, 2008 - Saturday Psalm & Praise: I'll Fly Away

After having a bad day last week, I went into town for something. When I got home, I sat in the van for awhile, enjoying the quiet, mulling over thoughts and circumstances. When I did get out and walk up to the house, I could hear all of our children in the kitchen singing this hymn. It was late; most of the lights were out, and they were all gathered together, huddled in a corner by the counter, just singing their hearts out. I have great kids!

LucyLillie had been getting fussy waiting for me, and they decided to sing to her. She loves to sing, and will sing right along with you. What a blessing to me. I stood there, listening to this small choir outside the kitchen window. I could barely see them all through the lace curtains. The snow was falling lightly, and it was a beautiful sight. It brought tears of joy to my heart and my eyes to hear it.

We serve a mighty God. Sometimes circumstances get in the way of our worship and serving Him. I have adopted a new favorite quote in response to all of the circumstances we have been dealing with lately:
"Refuse to allow circumstances to be the measure of your joy."

I know I already know that, but repeating it might cause me to remember it!  I do not want my circumstances to rule me.  We have been learning a lot about that, well, for a long time. After several months of discussion, I finally came up with something I repeat to our children when they get emotional over people or people's reactions:

The House of (whomever) will not rule the House of Dixon.

If we truly are the Lord's, then we cannot let someone else's emotions or ideals rule our House, our hearts. We belong to the Lord, and we are to do what He has prescribed for our family to do. I don't do what I know to do well enough sometimes as it is; letting someone else create circumstances that cause me to be emotional or sway this way and that, questioning things is not going to allow me to be in a place I can serve the Lord and walk in what He has for me and our family. Neither circumstances nor others can rule in our hearts. It must be the Lord and His Love.

This hymn is one of the first I heard as a new Believer. Our Grandmother (who may not have long to live now) and my mother-in-law sang this so often, I learned it right away. Apparently, our children love it too! Their open, cheerful denial of circumstances in singing this hymn the other night changed me and my focus, and I am determined to seek what the Lord has for me and walk in it.

I'll Fly Away
written by Alfred E. Brumley in 1929

Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

I am sorry that I have not participated with this weekly meme. I would like to, but frankly, its just one thing too many for me right now. I may do so in the future though and am thankful to be able to read those who do.

This is beautiful, Jacque and I will never again hear that hymn and not think of the lovely, tender scene you described.

I love your new motto. Keep reminding me of it. I, TOO, will try to learn to refuse to let circumstances rule me and be the measure of anything in my heart... my joy, my contentment, my choices, etc.!!!! What an insightful thought!

I have not visited your blog in a while, but decided to come by and visit. When I read this entry, it touched me deeply!! Thank you for sharing your story. I have been struggling with financial situations and have allowed those things to distract me from the real important things in my life. God and my family. I too, love that song it is my brother's favorite. Reading it confirmed the work God is doing in my life, healing my heart and our financial situation. Thank you!!

Hi,
I found you through Mama Archer, and I'd like to join the Saturday Psalm and Praise. My children and I try to learn a new hymn or psalm each week and I will do my best to blog on them. I have a few older posts on them, and added one for this past Sat. (which I linked here.)

I don't know how Mr. Linky works. Am I suppose to put my link to the current post here each week?
