Things to do Inside "When the Weather Outside is Frightful"

Homeschooling is not the same as a winter break or a public school vacation time, but sometimes we need some creative ideas of what to do when we have to keep our sweet little darlings inside! I would much rather bundle them up and send them outside, rain or shine - and we do that then - but the bone-chilling winter weather we are having is not ok for them to be out in. Besides, it takes as long to get ready as the time you can spend out in the weather, so it is hardly worth it!

While our five oldest do go outside twice a day to take care of our goats, chickens and dogs, playing soldiers and running races is quite out of the question!  Yes, some of these may be lame... but you know what they say about desperate times!
  1. Read a novel out loud with your children. Let them read; you read; act it out.
  2. Bake cookies. Warm up the house and your tummy as well with a great time of baking!
  3. Snuggle up on the couch under a giant blanket and watch a favorite movie together.
  4. Take some silly pictures! Print them off, get out some scrapbooking supplies and let them have at it! Who knows what silly memories you will come up with!
  5. Organize your pantry.
  6. Get out the Legos and have a building contest.
  7. Pull all the bedding off the beds and wash them. Talk with your children how nice it is to have clean sheets and teach them how to make the bed.
  8. Go through a closet. See if there are any toys to give away or throw away. Any clothes that can be donated?
  9. Get out a board game.
  10. Play charades.
  11. Hand out paper and pencils and sketch something. You can all sketch the same thing or each choose your own.
  12. Dust. Give everyone a damp cloth and let them have at it! The older children can reach up high, while the Littles will get everything they can get their hands on.
  13. Clay or play-do.
  14. Write a short story. Read them out loud to each other.
  15. Write parts of a short story. Have the next child add on to the story just read.
  16. Sing together.
  17. Clean out the refrigerator.
  18. Play the quiet game. This usually turns into the giggle game, but try it if you like!
  19. Just sit and watch your children sing or play.
  20. Play hangman.
  21. Play I Spy.
  22. Play the alphabet game.
  23. Look up Scripture.
  24. Read Scripture and have everyone guess where it is found.
  25. Sing Father Abraham with the motions.
  26. Get the spices out of your cupboard, clean them off and talk about the spice of life or how We can be a sweet smelling savour or a foul smell in the nostrils of God. Teach them which spices are which, let them smell them, and tell them what they are used in.
  27. Use safe colors and paint faces.
  28. Make some homemade soap.
  29. Write a book of devotionals.
  30. Scrapbook
  31. Make notecards.
  32. Clean up and organize boots and winterwear for when it is nice enough to go outside.
  33. Make popcorn balls.
  34. Churn your own butter.
  35. Do some needlepoint.
  36. Give your children quilt squares and a needle and thread. Even young children can do this with supervision.
  37. Wash the baby toys.
  38. Match socks.
  39. Fold clothes.
  40. Organize your thread or yarn by colors.
  41. If you have any candles, get them out and let them smell them.
  42. Type up blogposts.
  43. Discuss politics.
  44. Watch a debate.
  45. Talk about your favorite Bible characters.
  46. Read the Old Testament
  47. Memorize the Ten Commandments
  48. Have an oral impromptu spelling contest.
  49. See who can fold towels the fastest. Or diapers. Or match the most pairs of socks.
  50. Rearrange the furniture.
  51. Wash the windows.
  52. Make up your own Psalms and Hymns
  53. Memorize math facts.
  54. Talk about their future and what God is doing in their lives.
  55. Make a tent with chairs/tables and blankets
  56. Use blocks and set up a 'dominoes' trail.
  57. Take a nap.
  58. Alphabetize movies or books.
  59. Learn the piano keys.
  60. Read the encyclopedia or dictionary.
  61. Play hide 'n seek.
  62. Clean out behind the washer and dryer.
  63. Vacuum the refrigerator vent.
  64. Learn the Books of the Bible in order
  65. Study the genealogy of Jesus
  66. Make up Unit Studies with your children. Let them pick a topic and resources - books and videos - and make up ideas of things they would like to do for it.
  67. Boil water or turn the humidifier on high and watch windows crystallize and frost.
  68. Draw things on Paint on the computer.
  69. Plan a gourmet meal
  70. Exercise.
  71. Count things. Everything.
  72. Name things that are a particular color.
  73. Legos work well for both of the last two things to do.
  74. Turn on some lamps, get out some lawn chairs or beach towels in the living room, put on the sunglasses, lotion and pretend you are in a warmer climate.
  75. Let your children give you a shoulder rub. Or rub your feet. They love it... and so will you!
  76. Pick an animal character and follow each other around the house, acting like that animal.
  77. Finger paint.
  78. Tie-dye some old t-shirts.
  79. Cut up old sheets into hankies. Let them draw pictures on them with finger paints or markers. Use them as hankies or cowboy kerchiefs...
  80. Make cloth placemats for your table.
  81. Make paper place mats.
  82. Have a tea party.
  83. Make up name plates for each person for dinner.
  84. Give hugs and kisses.
  85. Watch a video and learn a Classical Ball Dance
  86. Learn something in a foreign language.
  87. Dream about the future.
  88. Look at everyone's baby Albums or vacation albums and remember the fun you had.
  89. Write a letter to Grandparents.
  90. Get all dressed up and eat a meal formally.
  91. Dance!
blessings!

What great ideas for things to do! It can be all too easy to just turn on the TV - this list gives me plenty of incentive to try other things with DS!

dearest Mother... wonderful list! I like the idea of lounging out in the living room as if we were on a beach, BUT we'd freeze to death. ; ) You know how cold house is! lol

And I didn't spell Luli wrong! lol Well, actually it should be spelled Lulie... that's the first sound of her name and the last. ; ) Anyway, HUGS from your 2dd who's almost 17!

Oh my - what a great list!

Our favorite thing to do is drag a mattress off the bed and onto the floor and jump on it until we are breathless. Like an indoor trampoline :)
