Keeping Up With Friends; Subscribing to Blogs
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

I just realized this week that I am missing out on some of my favorite blogs! And, furthermore, I don’t have to! I have tried using a reader, and that just does not work well for me. Let me tell you what usually happens about reading my favorite blogs:

  • I am writing on my blog and I see their link
  • or I get an email
  • or I find a comment from a friend on another blog.
  • I think, “Oh, man, I haven’t read their blog in forever, I wonder what they are up to,”
  • I go to their blog and spend a looooong time looking over posts I have missed for days or weeks, sometimes months.
  • I spend a whole bunch of unplanned time online, and I don’t get other things done;
  • or I forget to visit them entirely.

So, I have decided that to keep up with my friends, I need to subscribe to their blogs. I need the post delivered right into my inbox. It has worked out rather well already. I can read the post right away and comment right then if I want, instead of spending hours catching up.

Here are some blogs that I subscribe to. Hopefully I will better keep up with my friends better this way!

The Daily Planet
A Pondering Heart
Bunny Trails
My Home Sweet Home
Sprittibee
SisterLisa - The HomeSpun Life
Heart of Wisdom
Growing in Grace Magazine for Girls
Training Hearts

Some of my friends’ blogs, I can’t get by email, because they don’t have a feedburner by email subscription that I could find. :(

If you are reading Seeking Rest in the Ancient Paths in a reader and would like to subscribe to my new blog, Walking Therein, you can Subscribe in a reader for that too.

If you would like to re-Subscribe by Email, you can do that below.

Enter your email address: Delivered by FeedBurner

Basic Mr Linky
Thursday, September 20, 2007

I have had some questions/seen some questions about Mr. Linky. Let me tell you what I have learned.

First of all, you need a Mr. Linky acct. It is free, unless you want to display more than 1 Mr. Linky at a time - then it is only $5 for the basic subscription for a whole year. Not much for the meme addict, huh? ;)

Alrighty, the big question has been, "How do I get it onto my post??". Well, my experience has been with using the HTML Linky. It is simple, and it's what works with hsb. There are an abundance of different ones, though, to accomodate the different blog forums. I'm pretty sure that they work pretty similarly, since it is javascript.

Here on hsb, there is a little button on your Add Entry/ Edit Entry page. It is in the taskbar of the entry. See it? SOURCE. It turns your post into html. When you push that button, you open a whole new world of post design, lol!

To add Mr. Linky to a post, you simply push the Source button and scroll to the bottom of the page and paste the Mr. Linky code. If you need to hit enter to paste it on a new line, go ahead and do that. Be sure to paste both of the codes that were generated on the Linky Wizard. Push the Source button again. You're done. Mr. Linky will NOT show up on the Edit Entry page. It will show up on your Preview though, so you can check it there.

So, getting the Mr. Linky is pretty easy. After you sign up, you can go to the Wizard and start getting codes to paste into your entries.

To join a meme and put the linky on your post, it must be a shared meme. You subscribe to the meme on the linky by pushing the Suscribe Link. After you subscribe, you go to the Linky Wizard and get the code. It will have the meme id and your name on it. Paste it into your post, Voila! You now have a linky of your own for that meme.

If I have made an error in typing any of this up, please email me and let me know. Feel free to add any other info in the comments, too, as I have not used all facets of Mr. Linky!

.....Off to find out how to use it on Blogger!

 blessings! -Jacque

UPDATE: 10/04/07

Mr. Linky is now formatted for Homeschoolblogger (though I am not sure it is any easier than what I have been doing). You have to add something to your template... I knda' freaked out at that at first, but we re-do ourtemplates all the time, and it really isn't that big of a deal.

The only thing I found is that what you put into your template is just the header, and you still have to enter the javascript into your Source on your Edit entry page. So, if you don't mind copying (Cntrl+C) and pasting (Cntrl+V) both codes, just use the HTML only button. Otherwise, use the Homeschoolblogger selection and change your template.

Ok... I think that's all for now.

Here is a Mr. Linky for my Saturday Psalm & Praise meme for this week... just as an example!

Viewing My Blog
Tuesday, April 3, 2007

I have had a couple of comments that

my template is outta' whack....

It is worse on firefox.

It seems my entry column

goes across my who-o-o-

o-o-le template!

However, if you go to the
sidebar and just view the

actual post on its own page,

you can read it.

Open up IE and view it that way.

So, sorry about this.

I am going to change it-

*if* it cannot be fixed by hsb.

They upgraded the new and

nifty jump bar above

and my blog has not been the same since!

I put in an email to Jodi, who has always

been most-helpful, so I should

hear back soon enough!

In the meantime, you'll have

to view it one page-at-a-time!

If you want to view something

*REALLY* funny....

Blog Ills
Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Ok , anyone else having blog ills yesterday and today??

Yesterday I heard....

Where is my background?

Oh my... What happened to my template?

Why is my sidebar in my title?

- in addition to the lo-down on Friends' blogs whose templates are also 'messed up'!

Today, you may notice my sidebar looks like it may have disappeared... but it *is* to your right... and down a little...  scroll over....

Patience..... patience....

Javascript and Snowmen
Sunday, March 25, 2007

    I still have snowmen on my blog... did you notice?? Why? You may ask... Well, um, I don't want to lose my javascript. Silly, I know. I know it has become necessary for h sb to again remove javascript, so I have a couple of changes to make to my template that I have not yet done, only because of the javascript. I like my clock (and the 'Friends Online' counter) and the Homeschool blogroll and my Sitemeter....

   I do have a Blogger blog I've had for sometime.. so I can leave comments on other Blogger blogs... that I can put my javascript on, but this and hsb2 are my main blogs, and I don't plan to move.

   So... snowmen in the spring... hey, I'm in IN, so it isn't entirely impossible to *have* snowmen in the spring!

ha ha ... Blessings!!

-Jacque

Amanda, Jocelyn and I have received some pretty nasty, off-topic anonymous comments in the past week here and at hsb2.
Dana blogged about a solution, if you are interested.

Handy Blogging Info: How To Put A Link Into Your Comment!
Monday, August 7, 2006

-->Enter my CONTEST here<--

A Very Good Friend of mine, who happens to blog here at HSB1 and designs websites here at HSB1 gave my girls and me some very useful information for linking in a comment,  I had seen others' comments and wondered how it was done, so after Amber told Myrtle, she showed me how!

Use the following code (without the break in it) to create a link:

  1. Start with the arrow that is above the comma on your keyboard (<)
  2. then,  a href=
  3. next,  'http://www.link.com'
  4. then,   >NameOfLink
  5. another(<)
  6. then,  /a
  7. end with the arrow above the period on your keyboard (>)
    One thing I sometimes forget to do is to put the single quotes around the link, so be aware of that when you are checking to see if it is done correctly.
    Another thing you will want to know is that here, on HSB, the link will not show up as a link in the Preview. You will have to make sure you did it right, then check the comment you posted. It's no problem to fix if the blog author allows you to delete comments.

   I had a hard time figuring out how to post this, because you can't post the (<) (>) arrows around words! It won't read them! So, if you still don't understand, e-mail me, and I will e-mail you the code!

It will look a lot like this one, except for the arrows, instead of parentheses:
(a href='http://www.SoulRestEducationalSupplies.com')SoulRestES(/a)
It will look like this: SoulRestES and will show it is a link.

How I Added A Third Column to My Template
Tuesday, July 4, 2006

   I have had a few people ask me, and also saw some others' comments about adding a 3rd column, so I will tell you how I did it, and if it works for you - GREAT! If not, I will have to refer you to the other HTML geniuses out there - because I am NOT one of them!!

   I am an Algebraic HTMLer.... I made that up, of course. What I mean is, I figured out how to do everything to my template by finding what HTML did what and trying it all out over and over and over....

   Also- as you probably know, all HTML is NOT the same. My template lingo may not work for yours --- just ask Myrtle! (If anyone can figure out how to get her pics on her sidebar from overlapping, I am sure she is all ears...) Myrtle's HTML is coded different than mine, and I have not spent enough time with hers to figure it out yet -go figure! Also, she has done the trial and error 'HTMLing' without knowing why, so some of hers is , well,... I just don't know.

   This is also a really wonderful medium for you and/or your children to learn a little about HTML and graphics and such. You can play with it and not save it....

A HINT OF IMPORTANCE: You should save your template onto a wordpad or something before you do this! You should back it up every so often, depending on how often you play with/change it.

   So, if you are interested in a third column, here goes (according to MY HTML, of course):

  1. I actually copied my HTML for my first sidebar, which was .sidebar; Then, I renamed it.
  2. You can rename it .Sidebar2 or .SideLeft or whatever, as long as you know what it is.
  3. Then, I took that name and used the HTML code to put it where I wanted it on my template. If you want 2 smaller columns on each side of your blogjournal, then put it after your .main ends.
  4. I used the same HTML to put it into my template as it was for the other sidebar - i.e: !--BEGIN SIDEBAR--
  5. I put: !--BEGIN SIDEBARrtside-- for my new sidebar.
  6. I also had to change the td class to: td class='sidebarrtside'

   I had to fiddle with my column sizes quite a bit. JUST DON'T SAVE it, until you have previewed it, and it is what you want!

   I also had to replace and replace the Left margins of each column, so that they fit and I liked them, without them overlapping.

(I also changed my HEADER - if you are interested - , so I had to make sure they were the same at the top, but I will post that later, so as not to interfere with this)

There are about 800 or so pixels total in my template...

Here are where I set my pixels, so you have some point of reference:

.sidebar {

background-color: #F9F6D9;

width: 200px;

padding: 15px;

position: absolute;

left: 13px;

top: 440px;

.main {

background-color: #F9F6D9;

padding: 1px;

position: absolute;

left: 255px;

top: 440px;

width: 45%;

.sidebarrtside {

background-color: #F9F6D9;

width: 210px;

padding: 0px;

position: absolute;

left: 740px;

top: 440px;

NOW, I also went ahead and put border around mine...

and, that looks like this.....

border-top-width: 1px;

border-bottom-width: 1px;

border-right-width: 1px;

border-left-width: 1px;

border-top-style: solid;

border-right-style: solid;

border-bottom-style: solid;

border-left-style: solid;

border-top-color: #33338D; bold;

border-bottom-color: #33338D; bold;

border-right-color: #33338D; bold;

border-left-color: #33338D; bold;

   Did you know that you can take a look at all of this on your own??

   A FRIEND of mine told me that you can go up there to your VIEW button and go down to View Source, and you can view the HTML on a web page.  She also gave me a color site that you can choose all different colors from for your template: Zoicks.  Thanks, Denise!!

   And, finally - if this is just WAY TOO MUCH information, and you would rather leave it to the experts... I have Another FRIEND you may know.... She FIDDLES around with this stuff.... SHE is making a business of it, and I know she could help you!!

Toodles all... ( :

I Love To Read My Friends' Blogs, but.....
Monday, April 24, 2006

   And, I just found out last week how to read them from the link on my Manage Friends' page.  However, I cannot get past page 1.  If I click on it, it goes to my page 2.  I even used the Friends' posts URL and added page 2 behind it.

   Am I automatically seeing all me friends' posts or is there a page 2 I can't get to?

   How do you do it?        Thanks for any info!

Are You New To Blogging?
Saturday, April 1, 2006

I am putting this on here, because, though I blog almost daily, I am still learning a lot about the blogging world.
Yes, I said the blogging world.

Did you even know there was such a thing? Well, there is.

Now, I am in a quandry about whether I should double-post - put the same entry in both of my blogs or not.  I actually wrote this post on our Family Site.
This post will be beneficial (I hope) in both blogs, so I am going to give you a link to get there, ok? If you would like to read more about blogging, here it is:  New To Blogging?

Do you find this all very interesting??

There are even sites, like Technorati, that you can search blogs for information.  You know, like  Google or Dogpile , where you can search the WWW.  Now, at Technorati, they call the blog world the Blogosphere.   Today I found a site that registers blogs and ranks them -according to hits, I think.   It is The Truth Laid Bear. They have this whole "Ecosystem" ranking that puts blogs into different categories and then lists according to rank.

The scoop on me: Believer for 20 years; married 19 years; 8 children so far, hoping for more; live on a great hobby farm, with 7 goats, 2 dogs and 68 chickens. Oh, and 1 bathroom. That's always fun. :) The scoop on our homeschool: Bible-first, Living Learning Moments, meaning if it happens, it's a lesson. We learn life! How long have we been homeschooling? Well, our oldest is 18. How much longer do we have to go? Well, our youngest is almost 1. We love it and wouldn't have it any other way.

Jeremiah 6:16
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.
But they said, We will not walk therein.

HOMESCHOOLING
~Resources for Homeschoolers~

Keep their hearts. If you don't have their hearts, take note and re-capture their hearts!
Don't let the seeds sown by the ideal of today's youth culture ruin the glorious plans God has for your child.
Satan wants him. Your child is a jewel in Christ's crown, and satan wants him.
Train him as such.
You want him more. So does the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:1-13

1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
12 Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Exodus 20:1-17 The Ten Commandments

1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Matthew 6:7-13
The Lord's Prayer

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
