Well, I am now able to look back on the first official week of school. I can see where we need to make some definite changes, and I know that we will probably have to continue to make changes throughout the year, to find what fits best for our family. All in all, it went well. I am thankful for the opportunity to homeschool my children. I know with all my heart that it will be best for my special children. It is defintely making my household run differently too, and I think it will only get better from here on out. I crave routines, and get so much more done with schedules and routines, and having certain things that we do each day for school, is making my life better, because I can see my kids learning, and I know they are learning the gospel, etc. That is my main goal. So here are a few neat things that we did this week. We started a little booklet for our theme " all about me " it is so dang cute, it has little things like what does your home look like, and they draw a pic, etc. and I have been sooo pleasantly surprised at some of the kids' answers to the questions. Like What is your favorite game? I thought for sure Dylan would say Candyland, because that boy makes me play that game a million times a week, but he said hide and seek! LOL. Science has been super fun for Dylan . We have learned about plants, what they eat, how they grow, labeling parts of the plant and tree, etc. He cracked me up when I asked him the question " when I say the word plants, what do you think of?" and he said " things I am allergic too!!" what a funny guy!! He has his first science test ( well, really his first test ever, lol) on monday and he is soo excited! He had his dad help him study yesterday, which was cool to see Keith be involved and Dylan blew him away with how he knew all the answers, like " what does irrigate mean?" LOL. What a smart kid!!! For math we have been tackling ordinal numbers ( first second third etc) and I think he is finally getting the hang of it. It was alot harder for him than I thought it would be. He's a math whiz, adding, subtracting, etc and can count to 100 etc., but when I introduced something completely new, it was refreshing to watch him have to be taught something! He seems at times, to just already know how to do it all, so it was cool to be able to actually teach him something! We are also working on writing numbers 11-20. He is doing well and really enjoys it. Gospel lessons this week have been the story of Jonah, complete with popsicle stick puppets, LOL and we started working in the book of mormon prophets book from lds harvest. They colored a picture of Lehi and we started learning some neat facts on him and also about jerusalem at the time of his life. very cool stuff! Phonics and reading, we have been doing worksheet after worksheet on beginning consonants, etc and we will be starting early spelling cat, dog, etc and reading. We have been working hard on the phonics , and now actually get to start the fun stuff, reading!!!! History and geography have been fun this week. We are working on things like, the world is a circle / globe shape, their are different continents, countries, etc. and he is learning the names of the continents and he helped me to color a map of the continents. Next week we will take a continent a day ( of course this will go on into the week after too) and just learn something neat and unique about each one. Pretty darn cool! He is also learning about us history, about the flag, etc. We are going slow with this, because he is so excited about the continents and maps, etc, that I dont want to overload him with learning the history of the us at the same time. So we are going slow. LOL We have been talking about what it means to be trustworthy. We talked about being good friends, loyal, etc. We will continue this next week with some activities. For health we have been talking about having good habits and we are starting to learn about eating healthy. Marlee has had a fun first week. We did some really fun activities that I have found on various internet sites, like making a little panda out of circles, to learn about circles, and I had her sit at the chalkboard with a cup of water and a paintbrush and I wrote out the letters A, B, and C and she "erased" them with her water and paintbrush. She loved that. Ok, My hand is tired. LOL. I still have a billion things to do around here LOL. plus school to plan for next week, but I am looking forward to it! Love, Jaelle
