J and R learn at home!

Occupe', Occupe', Occupe'

That means Busy, Busy, Busy in French!

Maud arrived from France on Wednesday evening last week, and we've been quite occupé!   We've gone swimming, to the library, to the allergist for R (more about that later),  for walks, and to the Bronx Zoo (where J found another peacock feather, this time for R!).  This week we have more activities planned:  more swimming, maybe a park day, maybe the free movies, possibly a free concert on the town green, Maud has a trip to Boston with her agency, and on Friday, she, the kids, and I are leaving for a weekend in Maine!  Then next week and weekend is mostly packed up with plans as well, and she'll be leaving the following Tuesday.  Whew, this summer is flying right by!

The kids have been having a great time this summer with our foreign guests!  They asked Hanna and Soren how to say all kinds of words in German, and are now learning the same words in French.  (Some of the words, as you can imagine, are not really the types of words we often use in polite company, but what can you do?  LOL)   All three of our guests have been good sports about playing on the floor with the kids, giving them piggyback rides, etc.

I would say that I'll make a new post about R's allergy appointment, but we all know that I will never get around to it, so I'll just tack it on here:

We went to see the allergist last week.  To catch you up, after eating crawfish and lobster in the spring, R began scratching at her face, lips, and tongue, and saying "my lips feel weird, my tongue itches."  Not wanting to take any chances, I quickly gave her some Benadryl and called her pediatrician, who urged us to get her to the ER immediately, which we did.  She was fine within a few hours, and aside from being tired from the Benadryl they recommended every six hours for two days, recovered without incident.  It took a few months to get the appointment with the allergist, and it fell on the day after Maud arrived.  She came with us and waited with J in the waiting room (they played Battleship) so it was actually a big help that she was here!

Anyway, the doctor did the prick tests for shrimp, lobster, and crab (they didn't have crawfish).  They all came out negative.  The next step is to bring in cooked shrimp, lobster, and crawfish for them to use in the next prick test.  If those come out negative, then she will eat them in the office, and we will wait to see if she has a reaction.  If not, she is in the clear for those foods.  If she does have a reaction, we will be right there in the office, so they will be able to treat it immediately.  It's a little disconcerting, of course, but it's our hope that it was just a fluke thing and that she is not actually allergic to shellfish.

All right, I'm off to get started on our day!  The kids and I slept in until 8:00 this morning, which was nice, but now I havent' even had my coffee yet and it's after 9:00!   Enjoy your hot and humid Monday!

About Me

Welcome to our blog! I'm Michelle, wife to John (usually called Dad around these parts, and also in this blog). We have two awesome, silly kids: J, our son, who is 8 1/2, and R, our daughter, who is 6. I'm also a freelance writer who enjoys scrapbooking and reading in my spare time. This blog was started several years ago in Florida, but we moved back to our native Connecticut a year ago this spring. Come see how we spend our days, and what types of things my fingers come up with when I take a few minutes to blog. Enjoy!
