Chocolate Cake for Mozart

Posted at 1:12 PM on Jan. 27, 2006
I want to cheat on my diet today. I want to have chocolate cake. I also want to study Mozart. Why? Because it is Mozart's birthday today. It is also National Chocolate Cake Day today.

Why am I saying "I want to", instead of just doing it? Because these little people are being slothful today and not getting their chores done. I refuse to reward them with chocolate cake if they won't work.

If they DO decide to stop goofing off and do their chores, this is what I have in store for them today:

A Birthday Cake for Mozart!

Joannes Chrisostomos Wolfgang Gotlieb Mozart (or as we know him, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) was born on January 27, 1756.

He is one of our family's favorite composers. If you have never heard of the Mozart Effect, I encourage you to look into it. Studies have proven that exposure to certain types of sound, music, and other forms of vibration, beginning as early as in utero, can have a lifelong effect on health, learning, and behavior. The use of this music (including Mozart's) can also help strengthen listening abilities, concentration, and memory. This is what is known as the Mozart Effect.

Many naysayers and skeptics have claimed the studies to be unproven, but as the mother of several special needs children, I have SEEN the results for myself. Mozart has an especially calming effect on autistic and ADHD children. When my children have trouble concentrating on their schoolwork, I allow them to listen to a Mozart CD with headphones while they work. I use Mozart to sleep at night.

So, to celebrate the birthday of this musical genius, we can also celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day by making a birthday cake for Mozart.

Here are some links to some lesson plans that I found on the web about Mozart:
...and here is our family's FAVORITE chocolate cake recipe to celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day!

Hershey's Black Magic Cake
Ingredients:

    * 2 cups sugar
    * 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    * 3/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
    * 2 teaspoons baking soda
    * 1 teaspoon baking powder
    * 1 teaspoon salt
    * 2 eggs
    * 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk*
    * 1 cup strong black coffee OR 2 teaspoons powdered instant coffee
       plus 1 cup boiling water
    * 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or one 13x9x2-inch baking pan.

2. Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Add eggs, buttermilk, coffee, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed of mixer 2 minutes (batter will be thin). Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.

3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes for round pans, 35 to 40 minutes for rectangular pan or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost as desired. Yields 10 to 12 servings.

* To sour milk: Use 1 tablespoon white vinegar plus milk to equal 1 cup.

way col...and if ity weren't for Beethoven's Ninth, Mozart ould be my favorite. And to think, the GREATEST musical composition EVER written was written by a deaf man.

I have definitely heard of the Mozart Effect...in fact, now that I'm thinking of it (and to save room in your blog) maybe I'll blog about that. My list of things I want to get to is growing and I can't keep up.

I've been to Beethoven's birthplace in Bonn, Germany. And it has been invaded by Mozart. Mozart Kuegel are delicious, though. They are little chocolate balls wrapped in beautiful red wrappers with a picture of the composer on them.

quick question...I am adding a link description to each link in our little blogroll so you know what approach the person takes before you click (Charlotte Mason, Eclectic, Principle Approach, Traditional, whatever). How would you describe yours, so I get it accurate?

and you asked awhile back about your template for us dial-up users...yes, it loads much more quickly now! Question...mine is not displaying at all for Amber. Would you have any idea why? All I know is select the template from the menu and click ok. Then it is there.
