The Holy Bible - when I first started home schooling I came back to my Bible again and again. I found scripture to defend my beliefs that I was called to be a Keeper at Home, that I was the one the Lord had chosen to train up my children. This has been my greatest resource in my journey.

Home School Legal Defense Association - I feel that this is my “insurance policy” for our homeschool. I would recommend with the number of zealous caseworkers, and the news stories that abound about them overstepping their legal boundaries, that any family, but especially those headed by single mothers, consider membership as an essential part of your homeschooling budget.

Homeschool Foundation - This resource is their to help and support homeschooling families in need. They have a variety of funds available to homeschooling families based on their specific situations. Members Helping Members Fun - In the last few months, a number of Home School Legal Defense Association member families have been telling us that they are being negatively affected by the downturn in the economy—by either losing a job or having their salary reduced. Many have reported being laid off by an airline or related employer. If your family has been blessed with financial stability, and you would like to extend a helping hand to a fellow home school family, we have established the Members Helping Members Fund scholarship fund to assist families with their HSLDA memberships.
Compassion Fund - All undesignated gifts to the Home School Foundation will go into its “Compassion Fund.” Monies in this fund are used to cover the Foundation’s printing costs, give grants to local home school support groups around the country, and support other home-school related causes.
Widows Fund - Each year we hear from many member families who have lost a parent to death. Oftentimes, their heartbreak is compounded by financial constraints which make continuing home schooling difficult. Until now, all we have been able to offer these families was our heartfelt sympathy. Now, with the establishment of the Widows Fund, we are able to meet the needs of widows and orphans in a tangible way. This endeavor truly enables dedicated mothers to continue directing the education of their children at home
Special Needs Children’s Fund - An increasing number of families with special needs children have begun seeking the benefits of home schooling and the services of HSLDA. Approximately 10 percent of HSLDA member families indicate they are home schooling a child with special learning needs. In 1993, HSLDA realized that more guidance was needed for these families and hired a consultant to assist our families with learning needs of their children. The Special Needs Children’s Fund is designed to assist home schooling families with the financial challenges of privately meeting the academic needs of their special needs child.
Children of Single Parents Fund - "The Home School Foundation recognizes the struggles many single parents face in their commitment to homeschool. This fund is designed to assist Christian women in extreme circumstances, who are training their children in the Lord. The focus is on children who, through no fault of their own, experience financial hardship during their homeschooling years. This grant provides [one time] assistance to help these families overcome obstacles that hinder successful homeschooling."

Homeschool Oasis - I discovered the Single-Mom’s Homeschooling articles on this site, at about the same time I discovered Raggedy Janet. It gave me so much hope. I now knew that there were at least four other single mom’s out there that were home schooling, so I wasn’t completely crazy in my efforts.

Single Parent’s Can Homeschool by Linda Joyce Heaner - This is an excellent article of encouragement, that I found in two different places. Linda talks about many practical things that face single moms who are trying to home educate, be the keeper at home and often times the sole financial supporter of their family. Fears of a Single Mom by Lori Little - This article was amazing to me. In addition to feeling totally alone as a single mother who was home educating, I have also felt totally alone as I struggled with fear and panic over the years. A Single Parent’s Call to Outrageous Faith by Janet Whitley - This dear lady talks about walking by faith and truly the minute a single mom decides to embrace the high calling of Keeper at Home, she begins walking by faith as she may never have before. It is a very encouraging article about what the Lord can do when we let him, and how he rewards our obedience to his ultimate will for our lives.

Robinson’s Self-Teaching Curriculum - This is definitely a cost-effective curriculum for those on a limited budget. There are over 200 books on CD for a reasonable price. They also offer a scholarship program, where you can simply pay what you can afford. There are no frills. It’s literature is worth the investment. I own this curriculum. They also offer a discount on Saxon Math products as that is the Math curriculum they recommend using. The curriculum isn’t for everyone, but if you have nothing and need something to get started this is a great place to start.

Ambleside Online - This is a FREE online curriculum that covers Year 0 - 12. It is an advanced curriculum, with an excellent literature program. It also has a very strong fine arts element to it. It is a Charlotte Mason based curriculum. I have also used parts of this one in my homeschooling. http://www.amblesideonline.org

Book Samaritan - An awesome site that asks homeschoolers to donate the curriculum they no longer need or use, it is then redistributed to families who have need for curriculum. Old Fashioned Education - This is an AMAZING site! It is a directory of free curricula, literature and textbooks organized for the use of homeschooling families. She has weekly plans for all grades as well as book lists and direct links to the source for books recommended. MUST READ BOOKS
When You Rise Up by R.C. Sproul Jr. - This little book contains a great wealth of information. I found it caused me to rethink the “why” of my homeschooling efforts. Why am I doing this? So my children will be really, really smart? Well, hopefully yes, but... Should this be the reason why Christians home educate? Mr. Sproul directs us to consider eternity, the furtherance of the kingdom of our Lord and the real reasons that Christians should bring their children home, to train them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. A “must read” for all Christian parents!
God, I Need Help by Linda Heaner - This is an EXCELLENT resource for any single mother. It is especially encouraging to those of us who feel called to home educate. The book is the story of Linda’s first ten years as a single parent. It is amazing to see the Lord’s hand of protection and provision on Linda and her children. It once again proves that with the Lord NOTHING is impossible.
Unto the Least of These by Nathan Shaw - An excellent resource for single mothers and those who are ministering to them. This is my favorite, second only to Doug Phillips, Defending the Fatherless, in terms of resources.
Joyfully Single in a Couples World by Harold J. Sala - A dear sister in Christ picked this up for me, and it was a great encouragement for me. It is one of those books you have to pick up and re-read from time to time, to remind you that God has a purpose in every situation in our lives.

Homeschooldads.com - This online resource looks to contain a wealth of information for dad’s who are active in or considering home education for their families. At present they have no information specifically addressing single fathers needs, however, they seem very open to the idea.
The K-Dad Network - A blog site started by Scott Somerville, to support and encourage homeschool fathers to network with each other. Although not specifically for single fathers who are home educating, it can be a source of support and encouragement.

Homeschool Tracker - This has to be one of my favorite tools for home education. There are two reasons. The first is I’m a compulsive organizer. This helps me keep it together. It’s a great way to keep track of everything on the computer. The second reason is that it’s FREE. Not just a free trial, but the basic version is totally FREE . If you want to upgrade to the Plus edition you do have to pay a one time fee. A college friend who is also a homeschooling mom bought me the Plus version last year as an encouragement gift. I’ve made it well worth her investment. Another side note I need to add, is that Katie Gentile is absolutely amazing when it comes to tech support. I am computer illiterate and that dear lady has been there and walked me through the most unusual situations. So the personal tech support is also a biggie for me.

Child Evangelism Fellowship - This ministry is so incredible. The reason I’ve added it here is that they offer a free correspondence Bible study for all levels. I don’t know about everyone else, but my kiddo’s love getting mail. And this is mail worth getting. They usually have local chapters so check the main sight for the one nearest you.

If this is your first visit, know that you are not alone. Single parents can and do home educate, and the longer I do it the more I discover others doing it to. Not just in my little corner of the northern hemisphere, but around the world.
I don't update this blog regularly, only as I learn about new resources. Some may be outdated, and if they are I apologize. Homeschooling takes more time now than it use to, I spend much less time blogging.

Jan. 22, 2007 Preparing You - 2 Corinthians 1:4
One of my recent devotional readings was from 2 Corinthians 1. This verse struck me as being very pertinent to single parents - especially those who have chosen to home educuate inspite of the odds.
"Who (God) comforteth us in all our tribulation that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." 2 Corinthians 1:4
If we lean on the Lord for our comfort He is then preparing us to comfort others, through the same means. What a blessing and an encouragment this thought was to me.

Linda Joyce Heaner of Abiding Hope Ministries
has begun to periodically put out an email newsletter for single
mothers. I receive this newsletter and find it to be a blessing.
Linda has also written an excellent book called God, I Need Help.
About her journey as a single mother. I have read it and strongly

Here is another FREE program for homeschooling families. It's KISS Grammar
and it seems to use living books. I haven't explored it
much. I knew about it once awhile back, then forgot about
it. Recently someone at the Old Fashioned Education Yahoo group
shared it again and when I went to check it out I went - oh, yeh! I
forgot about this site.

I remember reading about this awhile
back. I don't remember where I first heard about it,
actually. What I do remember is that I thought at the time - wow!
that's a good idea.
Then this week I called MaineMommyDeb to see if she had a microscope
(because she has "everything" ) that we could borrow. Short story
made long - there was no way I was going to borrow the mircoscope she
has cause it's just way too cool for us. At the same time she
forwarded me an email from Homeschool Buyers Co-op where they were offering a discount on microscopes to members.
Membership is -- yes, FREE. So please go by check out there site
and sign up - you just never know what they'll have for discounts where.
Also, while you're there, they have a Free Curriculum & Resources
page. Be sure to check it out and let me know what you think.

Nov. 2, 2006 Reading Rainbow Teacher Guides
I got a catalog in the mail the other day
from the company that distributes the Reading Rainbow shows on VHS
& DVD. While this is a nice resource they are rather pricey
at $29.95/show.
However, I have many of the books that they feature on Reading
Rainbow. And what I wanted to share here with you is that
on their website they have free (yes my favorite word, I know) teachers guides.
So go by and visit, see if you have any of the books and if you do,
maybe you'll find ideas that you can use in your homeschooling efforts.

was the original, very first post I put on this blog. Now over
six months later it seems time to update it as our community has grown
and shifted. Single mom's are home educating and blogging.

Here at Homeschool Blogger there is a small, but growing community of
single mothers who have been called to be keepers at home and to train

Oct. 5, 2006 Update on Our Ministry
While most of you know that my primary
focus is to minister to the needs of single homeschooling parents, the
Lord seems to be expanding and growing my ministry to include mentoring
families new to home education and to encouraging low income families
to take a step of faith to home educate. There are more and more
resources available almost daily to make home education a very possible
option for all of us who know that we need to bring our children home
where they belong so that we can train them up for the Lord.

The last two issues of Home School Court
Report have had a small ad in them I wanted to share. Please
forgive me for not sharing it sooner.
"Whether your student enters college or launches into a full-time
employment after high school graduation, computer literacy is a
required skill. If your family doesn't yet own a computer we have
good news! Through a program called Computers for Learning, the
United States government is giving free computers to schools, including

This is open to ALL not just single parent homeschooling
families. However, I know as a single parent that the expense of
a computer is often out of our budget. Please visit the site and

A big thank you to cmphotomommy for this link to Book Samaritan.
I don't know alot about it. I've only just begun to check out
their site and email them. It seems that if you are a
homeschooling family with limited funds, resources etc. They will
help provide instructional materials to help in your homeschooling.

With the new academic year upon us. I
just want to update and remind everyone that single parents can home
educate. They do. And if they feel the Lord is leading them
to, they should.
It seems impossible. However, where the Lord wills it, He also
provides a way. It is different for each single parent
family.

If you are a single homeschooling parent
here at HSB (or anywhere else in the blogsphere for that matter) and
you are NOT on my list of single homeschooling parents but would like
to be, please leave a comment, so that I can update this list.

Jun. 15, 2006 How You Can Help Single Mom's Home Educate
I had a friend a little over a year ago
who shared that she'd so often wanted to do something to help me, but
didn't really know how to help. Do you know a single parent like
that? She bought us groceries and she has lent me
curriculum and even given me brand new curriculum. She has been a
blessing and an encouragement to me in my homeschooling efforts.
I've been amazed how I went from being the only single parent I knew
who home educated to attending a church where there was a small handful
of us who home educated, to entering the blogsphere and meeting single
moms around the world who home educate. All of this in just a
span of five short years.
As the numbers of single parents who
are home educating grow, so are the resources available to help meet
their unique needs. I recently learned about a program I am very
excited about. It's very small, but growing, and is an EXCELLENT
opportunity for others to help single parents home educate.
Home School Foundation has a program under their Compassion Fund
designed specifically to help single parents who are training their
children for the glory of the Lord to continue to home educate.
It's called the Single Parent Program.
Single parents who benefit from this program must have the
recommendation of their local or state homeschool group leader and
their pastor.
While the Lord continues to bless and grow my home schooling endeavors,
I was excited to learn about the program. At the same time, He
has blessed so abundantly, that I have not had to request help from
it. I'm grateful to know it is there, should my family ever have
a need. As my teen enters high school and prepares for a career
in nursing, I'm finding the curriculum we believe is the best to
prepare her for this calling, also seems to be more expensive than
anything we used in the younger grades. The Lord continues to
faithfully provide and meet our needs in this area. I'm certain
there are others who are not as fortunate.
Making a donation to this might very well make the difference
for a single parent family desireing to continue to home
educate. I hope you'll prayerfully consider this!

Apr. 19, 2006 From One Single Mother to Another
From One Single Mother to Another
is a book written by Sandra P. Aldrich. I'm only through the
second chapter, but based on what I've read so far, I know I will be
recommending it to single mothers.
This dear lady has walked
the road ahead of us. She knows the paths we must choose
from. She has been there. Her wisdom, insight and humor are
so encouraging.
Focus on the Family
is one place where this book can be obtained. Remember, don't let
the cost be the reason for not getting and reading this book.
They will send you the book, even if you are not able to make a
donation at the time you request the book.
