8 Random Things about Me
... Posted in Fun stuff
I got tagged by Eve, so here it is...
Rules of the game:
1. Post the rules of the game.
2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
5. Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your blog.
1. I love chip dip. Too much.
2. I can’t back up when I drive. Well, I can… I just avoid it.
3. I always wanted to work for a magazine… and now I do! (The Old Schoolhouse magazine, that runs homeschoolblogger… imagine that!)
4. I’m a born-again, evangelical, Bible-believing Christian.
5. I don’t really tan… I’ve tried. I’m perpetually pale… don’t burn, really either.
6. I love gardening, and do pretty good, but houseplants die almost instantly on me.
7. I know how to change the rear brakes on a ’91 Toyota Previa.
8. I have never pumped my own gas. Nor do I want to.
I tag:
Whoever reads this and wants to do it, since I’m not really into making enemies of those who hate being tagged!

Christmas Quiz
... Posted in Fun stuff
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? I like eggnog. Just the store-bought kind. Except 2 pregnancies ago-- it rebelled violently.
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? We only do the Tim Allen-type of Santa.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? Coloured lights on the tree, after we fight with them for awhile. No lights on the house.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? Nope. I don't need it... *grin*
5. When do you put your decorations up? Maybe a week before Christmas. Maybe. Maybe 2 days before. Call me Scrooge.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish? The big one with all the food on it.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: Going to my Auntie Carolyn's on Christmas Day.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? My cousin Kevin broke the news to me.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We allow the kids to open one gift.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Most of the glass balls have broken over the years, so most of the decorations are handmade ones-- crocheted snowflakes, candycanes, small knitted angels, tiny dollar-store apples. The odd pewter or craft-fair finds.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? I love a good snowstorm, especially the kind that shuts everything down for a couple of days. Watching it snow from the comfort of me house is one of my favourite things!.
12. Can you ice skate? I can. It's stopping I can't do.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? I think maybe the big yellow Barbie camper/RV thing I got in 3rd grade. If you remember what that thing was called, leave me a comment. *never mind, it was called a Star Traveller, and I just found it on ebay...lol*
14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Seeing my kids happy.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Pumpkin pie. Lots of whipped cream on top.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Eating yourself stupid. That or candlelight services.
17. What tops your tree? Usually a crocheted angel.
18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? This is a trick question, right? I mean, I love the making people happy part of giving, but who am I kidding? As Buzzsaw Louie said, "Christmas is when you get stuff!"
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? O Holy Night.
20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum? I love candy canes. Especially the chewy, year-old ones I find in the Christmas decorations box.

the things that google me
... Posted in Fun stuff
OK.. that title doesn't sound exactly right but whatever.
I check my sitemeter pretty often, to see not only how many people are visiting me, but where they're from, and how they found me. One way is through Google-- and boy, the variety of searches that I turn up on. Ambleside Online, june bugs (twice-- I didn't know they were quite THAT fascinating....), and a search for "my little bra"....????? Don't recall blogging about that...
Anyway.
I must try to be more interesting.

Coat pocket tag
... Posted in Fun stuff
At the homeschool forum (CHB, in the sidebar) I visit, there's a tag game going on where you go check your coat pocket to see what's there.
My treasures were:
Wal-mart receipt
$1.51
set of keys
gloves
3 (used but dried) kleenexes
2 Co-op receipts
grocery list (from mid-January)
To (mis)quote a TV commercial, what's in your pocket?
I'm not going to tag anyone in particular, but leave me a comment with the link if you play! It was pretty funny on the CHB forum, what some of the ladies had stuffed in there!

Kitchen-tag
... Posted in Fun stuff
I was tagged by coffeemama so here goes....
1. How many meals does most of your family eat at home each week? How many are in your family?
21 meals, 7 people.
2. How many cookbooks do you own?
I have no idea. There's a small stack in the basement I rarely use but want to save in case the kids want them, and there are maybe 10 in the kitchen cupboard. One of which, I have to tell about-- it's a big black book, kinda like the one I mention in question #5, but bigger. It was my grandmother's, and besides recipes, it contains such information as "Randall went away Aug 23 '52" (my grandfather worked on the Imperial Oil boats), similar info for my uncles, and there's a recipe for After Dinner Mints in my mom's grade 5 handwriting. Lots and lots of recipes cut out of old magazines, and packages, and few of the written ones contain much more than the ingredients. The recipe in there for Hot Milk Cake is especially good.
3. How often do you refer to a cookbook each week?
Maybe once or twice... usually if I'm baking.
4. Do you collect recipes from other sources? If so, what are some of your favorite sources (relatives, friends, magazines, advertisements, packages, the internet, etc)
I get some from packages, some from the internet (I'm with mamasquirrel on this one- Hillbilly Housewife is an amazing wealth of recipes for the economically impaired!!!), but mainly from friends or relatives who have fed me something I want more of.
5. How do you store those recipes?
I either write them on index cards, and put them in this little ugly green (70's) card holder thingy, or I write them in my black book (8"x10" hardcover book I once was supposed to use as a Sociology journal, but found a better use for).
6. When you cook, do you follow the recipe pretty closely, or do you use recipes primarily to give you ideas?
Depends on the recipe. I generally substitute what's on hand, and leave out what we can't eat.
7. Is there a particular ethnic style or flavor that predominates in your cooking? If so, what is it?
How about "Maritime Basic"... lol... although Asian (sweet n' sour?) and Italian (spaghetti sauce?). Most meals are painfully plain (meat, potatoes or rice, and some other vegetable).
8. What's your favorite kitchen task related to meal planning and preparation? (eating the finished product does not count)
Hmm... snacking on the ingredients while you're putting it together....lol
9. What's your least favorite part?
Peeling.
10. Do you plan menus before you shop?
Rarely. Even then, it's only, "I want lasagne this week, so I better get what I need." I generally make the same types of meals, so I just buy the stuff I normally use and plan meals around that.
11. What are your three favorite kitchen tools or appliances?
Crock-pot, HUGE measuring cup/ mixing bowl, and any knife or peeler that a leftie can use (trust me, they are not all equal).
12. If you could buy one new thing for your kitchen, money was no object, and space not an issue, what would you most like to have?
One of those pot rack things that hang from the ceiling, with a bunch of good quality pots, pans, and utensils included!!!
13. Since money and space probably are objects, what are you most likely to buy next?
Tea towels. Maybe some cup hooks.
14. Do you have a separate freezer for storage?
We have two freezers. A big one we bought new several years ago, and a smaller (older) one we were given by some friends who were moving. When we get our side of beef, they're both full- one with beef, the other with stuff like bread, fries, vegetables, ice cream... usual freezer stuff.
15. Grocery shop alone or with others?
Usually with hubby. I actually HATE shopping by myself.
16. How many meatless main dish meals do you fix in a week?
Maybe 3 or 4... per year. They aren't very popular in this house. Assuming this question means supper dishes. Dinner and breakfast, that's another story.
17. If you have a decorating theme in your kitchen, what is it? Favorite kitchen colors?
My theme is rather eclectic. I like stuff that reminds me of fall. I like blues, greens, and browns for a kitchen, but, alas, we rent and haven't painted anything. The entire house is a boring, monotonous, beige. Except where the 10 layers of paint have partly peeled off, and then there's glimpses of an ugly lime green, and an uglier yellow. Some yellows are pretty-- not this one.
18. What's the first thing you ever learned to cook, and how old were you?
Scrambled eggs. I think I was 11.
19. How did you learn to cook?
~"MOMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!! How do you do this???????"
~"Package instructions: empty into large casserole...." LOL
~recipe books with detailed instructions
~After I got married, I learned from my m-i-l how to make bread, and a few other indispensible recipes.. like Million Dollar Icing!
20. Tag two other people to play.
I tag..... Laurabc and Penelope !!!
