Tightwad Tuesday

This is my very first time doing Tightwad Tuesday.  My tip for this week is a very obvious one to some of you, I am sure, but it is so important that it bears repeating here.

Spend cash.  Spend ONLY cash.  This is not for things like the mortgage or electric bill which come out of your checking account, but rather is for discretionary spending… ie, shopping.

Statistics show that you will spend AT LEAST 12-18% more on average if you use a debit or credit card than if you use cash.  I am going to assume for the sake of this post, though I know it is probably not the case, that every person who reads this does not use credit cards.  But, it is important to realize that debit cards are not the same as cash.  Think about it.  Banks and retailers are in it to make money.  Your bank does not get interest from you if you are using a debit card, so why would they spend money to produce the card for you?  No, it’s not for your convenience.  (If they cared about that, they would pay your overdrafts with no fees.)  It is because they get paid a fee by Mastercard or Visa, who in turn gets paid a fee for use by retailer who take your card.  So why would retailers want to pay 2-4% to take your debit card?  Again, if you think it is for your convenience, think again.  (If they were out for that, they would put the milk in the front of the store.)  It is because they know you WILL definitely spend that 12-18% more in their store with the plastic, thus justifying them paying the small fee for higher sales.

Yes, it involves a few extra steps like budgeting and then getting the cash out for the categories you spend at the store (Like groceries or gas.).  And you may have to come up with creative solutions for some issues.  For example, I hated spending cash at the gas station because I had to herd all 3 kids out of the van and go in to the store to pay rather thank paying at the pump.  So now I take my cash, purchase prepaid gift cards for my regular gas stations, and then use those since they are finite like cash.

The payoffs are definitely worth it.  Want to give yourself a substantial savings with very little effort before you even enter the store?  Well, take my tip for this week and USE CASH!

Very, very true. We are on a very tight budget, and I have found, when I only have cash, I become much thriftier, and weigh every option when it comes to spending, especially when grocery shopping.

Great post!

This is advice that bears repeating. I always use cash for groceries, shopping, etc. It makes it easier for me to "just say no" to impluse purchases. Plus, I watch my budget more carefully.

We do the same thing. Sometimes I feel so behind the times by not using a debit card (or I should say I am made to feel that way by cashiers), but who cares. I've heard way too many times about debit card errors (money being taken out more than once for a transaction, etc.) plus gas stations put an extra hold on your account when you use a debit card.

Thanks for getting this post out there... I am always reminding people that paying with cash is the best option. I carry my little FPU envelope everywhere. I even had to make a bigger purse in order to make room for it.
The only thing I use my debit card for is gas. We live in a big city and I would not leave my kids in the car to pay for gas in the store, and I also don't want to take 6 kids out of the car to go in with me.

Oooooooh, i love your blog design!
Anne is one of my favorite characters.

Ya know, i had never thought of the fees for the debit cards. You articulated all of that so well. Definately something for me to "chew on" and consider.
I hardly ever use cash any more.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi, thanks for stopping by and commenting :) I hope your brother is better now. Was it from an expired product? My DH said he's had food poisoning before we were married, which I believe he was eating right out of the cans LOL.

re: using cash- oh I really needed to read this. I have started to get comfortable with my debit card, and guess what I spend more even if the kids have money too.. yesterday my son bought some jeans and shoes, didn't have enough cash so I paid the rest on debit.... well they were needed.. lol ugh. I wonder if chocolate would jump into my cart if I only used cash? :D

Feb. 27, 2008 - It's a daily thing...

I hope you are encouraged and not too overwhelmed. I have to renew my commitment to managing my time every single day! And when I do not, I am back to my old time wasting ways! It is a balance, really. I personally need down time to recharge, so I cannot mistakenly think that it is a time waster. And being quiet before the Lord is another good use of time. Thanks for stopping by. When I saw your comment, I had to come back. I am turning my computer back off now. *wink*

Feb. 27, 2008 - Credit Cards

Posted by pathoflife
OK, maybe you can help! FPU teacher to teacher. We totally agree that we should not carry credit cards and especially carry balances with high intrest. The problem, My husband has a Credit Card Air miles card. He is self employed and we only purchase business expenses on it. We never carry a balance so we never pay interest on it. Every year, we are the few percent that actually use our free airline tickets. We have gone to Hawaii twice now on them and are planning to go again in April. My husband has always been wise in his spending even before FPU. We are stuggling with wether or not to get rid of the card. It really works to OUR benefit. Are we justifying something here? What do you think?

My husband and I were just talking last night about returning to the envelope system for our dining out budget. We are so much more careful when we do that.
