The Mourning Cloak - Winter's Butterfly

I took a photo of this beautiful Mourning Cloak butterfly when we were talking with our neighbor Mrs. Kraft. I just happened to have my camera with me at the time when Elizabeth said, "Hey mom, look! There’s a butterfly.” It was about 20 feet above the ground in the large maple tree that we were sitting under. It’s really incredible that I was able to get a shot like this (including the proboscis) because I seemed so far away, but it lingered on the maple florets giving me the opportunity to snap about 25 pictures.

The Mourning Cloak is a fascinating butterfly. You can learn why it's called winter's butterfly at this site from Chicago Wilderness magazine.

Mourning Cloak Butterfly

Something that stood out to me in the article about this unusual insect, was how it provided it's own natural anti-freeze. It's things like this that prove to me time and time again that there is a God and in his grand scheme of things, has even given to these little ones a way to survive the blasts of the cold Chicago winters. It took an intelligent creator to provide this and no big bang theory can prove otherwise to me.

Winter Butterflies

Wow! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with our family . . . we will keep our eyes open for Mourning Cloaks here in the SE Wisconsin. I wonder if they winter this far north of Chicago. We'll let you know if we see some.

Hello fellow artist/writer!

Hi there! I saw your son's post on the Home page and followed it to your website where I found that you are also a homeschooling artist/writer! How wonderful! This blogging community is opening my eyes to all of the wonderful, creative people God has homeschooling. I'll have to add your books about nature journaling to my list of art class books.
