A couple weeks before Father's Day, we invited the children of the TOS blog family to join us in a letter writing project to honor their Dads. We had a wonderful response and were touched by the many heart-felt letters written by children to their fathers. We received one letter from a military wife Cindy Burlingame that was particularly moving because her husband was soon to be deployed and their little girl would not see him again for six months. At that time I felt led to send the e-book edition of The Gift of Family Writing to their family. She wrote a kind thank you and said how much she believed our book would bless her family and encourage her husband with ideas for writing home during this difficult separation. At that time my son Eric and I discussed the possibility of making The Gift of Family Writing accessible to as many military families as possible. I put the idea on the back burner until this week.
One night I was up very late and just happened to read the post of a military wife stationed in Hawaii. She asked if anybody knew of any nature journaling resources to feel free to contact her. Nature journaling is near and dear to my heart, so I contacted her about some of the resources we offer and also let her know that we were giving our e-book to military families for free to thank them for the sacrifice they are making on our behalf, and because we could only imagine how hard it must be for them to be separated for such long periods of time. She left a comment on my blog and the next morning I received a comment from Trish Nonaka from http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/military/174442/ wanting to know if she could post information about our book on her blog. Trish got the ball rolling and the news is traveling fast. If you know of a Christian military family, home school or not, who might like a copy of our book, please feel free to give them the link to this post. We just ask that they leave a comment or story about their family to share with us, so that we can get to know them better. Prayer requests are appreciated.
There is one aspect of The Gift of Family Writing that is still a bit of a secret. About 20 different writers from homeschoolblogger have contributed to this project, and I can only say that their writing is the icing on the cake. I pray along with the contributing writers that each life this book touches would become a vessel to be used for recording God's faithfulness now and for generations to come.
Blessings to you all, Jill Novak and Family

Jill,
Thank you for doing this for military families! As an Army Brat (My dad is now retired from a career in the military), I enjoyed being able to "see the world" so-to-speak. However, there were times when it was difficult to live so far away from family. (I was to be flower girl in a cousin's wedding, but she was in Okla. and we were in Germany. So, I didn't get to be her flower girl.) Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for doing this for military families. I'll pass the word along, too, if that's all right.
BTW, I heard about this from Janet's recent post.

Hello
Hello. I just saw the link on the front of the Homeschool Blogger from someone else's post. My family and I are a military family. We just moved to Colorado Springs, CO just this past June. It's been a crazy and weird time, as we have never been anywhere but in the Southeastern US. My hubby is in the US ARMY and he will be deploying sometime soon. I'm not looking forward to it again, as he just got back from a year long deployment in January. Our two kids don't know much that he's going again, but we do hope we can do better than last time since we know what to expect a little more.
I would definitely love to read your Ebook. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for your offer. Your e-book would be a blessing to our family. I heard about this through Trish and Christina.
We are a family of 7. My husband re-enlisted in the Army Reserves this year after being 'out' for 9 years. We aren't sure what the future holds for our family, but we are trusting the Lord as we do our part in serving this great nation.
God bless you and your family.

Thanks !
Hi Jill,
Thank you so much (in advance) for your e-book...Our whole family will look forward to reading it. My husband is in the Navy, we have 4 children, and I heard about your offer from Trish. In a few days we'll be making (another) cross country move, this time from CA to FL. We haven't faced a deployment yet, but we most likely will in the near future. We are all striving to improve our abilities to write and to inspire a "reluctant writer" child...I am trying to encourage the kids to keep a scrapbook and a journal, so I know your book will help us...Thank you,
~Vicki

Our family
We heard about your offer from Vicki - who knows how much I struggle with the concept of teaching/encouraging my kids to write! We have been homeschooling for 4 years, since our time in Japan, and are about to experience our first deployment in 13 years of Navy life. We've had no more than 35 days of separation from my husband so far. I would like to encourage my kids to keep in better contact with their dad while he is gone, so I look forward to what this book has to say.
Blessings-

Thanks so Much!
We are a military family. I have four beautiful children and love homeschooling them all. My husband is Air Force. He PCSed to Korea two years ago for a very long year apart for our family. I learned alot about writing that year. It is hard to be military but such a blessing as well! I love moving from place to place to see what the Lord has for me. I love being a military wife and am proud to bursting of my husband and the job he does! We are very patriotic in this house! And I just want to say thanks to all the other families that sacrifice so much for our freedom. And for people like you who do these nice things that make us feel so special! So God bless! And I will be looking forward to my e-book! Tanya

What a wonderful idea!
I love the idea of your book. I am a military wife and early next year my dh will be deployed for the first time. I a very proud of him and blessed to be his wife. I know my dc are also proud of him, but they are apprehensive of him being in such an area. I am as well. I will pray our way through this time and kow that God will watch over him as he does this important work.
Blessings and love to you and your family. Thank you for remembering military famillies and for being sucha blessing to them.

Deployment Letters
My Army National Guard husband left for training on April 22nd 2006. On July 19th, 2006 he arrived in the Middle East. The whole time he was in training here in the states, I didn't write to him once; he called me on his "day-job" company's phone every other day. Twice, however, after he left for Kuwait, friends suggested that I need to send handwritten letters, rather than just waiting for my geek husband to set up email in the desert. So, my writing began in earnest. I simply wrote what was going on so that he could feel connected and not miss out on too much. Easy for me, a writer at heart.
I then thought maybe I could inspire our 4 children to each pick a day out of each week to postmark something to him. I knew that our three boys would be at a loss for the lengthy tomes that I have no trouble with. Our daughter ate up the idea and set to it. To the boys I suggested a postcard, or report on a recent movie they'd seen: basically, any small thing; I begged. I only got grunts. What's a mother to do?
Then we returned last night from our family vacation and this morning in catching up on missed news, I find this over on Homeschool Nations. I would love to find a way to inspire my reluctant writers. My husband will be away for a year. Our sons are 19, 15, and 13. Our daughter is 9. They are doing fine, and I don't have the challenge of toddlers underfoot, but the non-talking teen boys do leave me a bit befuddled at times!
Thank you for your kind offer, and touching support of our situation. It just shows that in many cases, true Americans really do believe that we are all in this together.

husband gone
Hi,
We have a Daddy who is gone right now to Iraq and its not easy in the least. We pray for his safety and his salvation. I'd love to have help with encouraging the art of letter writing and preserving this time through this process.

Army Brat to Army Wife.....
Dear Jill~ Your writings are wonderful! I am a Military Dependent, Wife, & Mother of two. My belief is that God has angel wings for all military wives! I am a military brat, as my Dad was, as his Dad was. Kind of like begetting a name. (Generational) Being a military spouse adds to my excitement! When my Husband & I took our vows, we are extremely serious about keeping them alive. Every two to three years, I get the chance to live someplace exciting & new. If its not that exciting, its definitely new. & if its not that new, I make it exciting! Kids live vicariously through their parents for many years of their lives, & I do not want my kids to be bored with their own life! Right now, we are overseas in Korea. We have been here for the past two years. My Husband & I thought that the family might benefit by learning a bit about the culture, so we enrolled our children in the Korean Preschool. We do a night of culture a week, & allow Gabrielle & Montgomery to order food for us. Always living on the edge! This experience never would have been possible had we not had verve for life, either! Our Family is experiencing what it is like to be apart, & together again. Through this, we learn about traditions, making the most of it, & learning about love. We never look at days in a month, & think...Jeez o' Pete, there is alot of things to do... We look at things a bit differently. I am proud to be a military wife! I would love to recieve the "Gift of Family Writing".

Your Book
We are excited to hear about your book, and would love to receive it! My husband just entered the Army at the age of 34, after leaving his Chiropractic practice--he has always wanted to serve his country, and figured it is now or never! We are a homeschooling family with four children ages 7 and under. DH is still in training, but is scheduled to deploy possibly in January. We would appreciate prayers for the Lord's protection for my husband ,and His will to be done in our family's life--where we will be stationed, etc. Thank you!
I'm not sure where to put my e-mail address so that it does not show to everyone?
I will check back to see if there is a reply eith instructions. :-)

Husband deployed
Hello,
My husband deployed 21 days after we moved to a new duty leaving me here with our five children 9 and under to unpack and get settled. We still have not officially started homeschool this year as our books are not fully unpacked. I am amazed at how crazy our life seems on the outside looking in but how faithful our God has been throughout this time.

Husband deployed
Hello Jill,
My husband deployed 21 days after we moved to a new duty station leaving me here with our five children 9 and under to unpack and get settled. We still have not officially started homeschool this year as our books are not fully unpacked. I am amazed at how crazy our life seems on the outside looking in but how faithful our God has been throughout this time. Please pray for safety for all of us during this time of separation. My husband (and best friend) will not return home until next summer.

Hello! My sister sent me the link about your free eBook for military families.
We are a homeschooling family with a dd age 6, ds age 4, adn ds age 5 months.
My husband is an officer in the USAF. We are int he middle of the biggest transition of our married lives. After 13 1/2 years of service to our country, the Lord is leading us out of the military. We will be transitioning soon. This is one of the biggest decisions we have ever made. Please pray for our family.
Thank you!

Well, looks like I'm 'anonymous', although I used to have a (n unused) blog here!
Thanks so much for your offer to military familes...
My husband has served in the US Army for over 24 years. We're currently homeschooling our family of five children on the Maryland side of Washington, DC and Daddy commutes to the Pentagon every day. I had to laugh recently when a non-military friend was aghast at my husband's hours - he leaves for work each morning before 6AM, returning by 8 or 9 each evening. By military standards, that's not too bad, but my friend was appalled! Oh, well... you get used to such things... right?!
We've just returned from two years in South Korea and don't know where or when we'll be moving again... I think the constant uncertainty of the military life is a great stressor - at least it is for me!
Our kids have lived on 3 continents, which is certainly exciting, and a great boon to our homeschooling. We've travelled all over Europe and some in Asia, as well as crossing the US several times. We rarely have friends where we move, but sometimes run into old friends on our way here or there, and the kids always make new friends, once they overcome their grief at leaving the old ones. Mom doesn't always fare as well, depending on the proximity of other homeschooling families...
Moving can be exciting - fitting into a new set of quarters, finding our way around a new area, but it also saps Mom's energy. An international move can take 6 or more months from the start of packing to being even partially settled in the new 'home' - sometimes I wonder how much actual 'schooling' I could accomplish if our books weren't packed for 6 months of every other year!
Ah, well, you can tell I'm a bit tired today, lol! I tried to give you a tiny snapshot of our military life. We're glad to serve (most of the time, lol!) and will continue to do so until God shows us another plan.
Thanks again for your lovely blog and the offer of your ebook! HeatherPtrsn@cheerful.com
