The Gift of Words

Have you heard about interactive journaling? If not, you're in for a treat. Interactive journaling is an exchange of words between parents and children, siblings, or spouses. This type of journaling is nothing like the secret diaries or private journals that we grew up with. Family members are encouraged to write in each other’s journals for the purpose of strenghtening family relationships. Interactive journaling allows words to be given away as gifts; it’s a form of communication that bridges the gap like no other.

I'm frequently asked, So what kind of words can we write in each other’s journals? With that question in mind I offer the following suggestions to you.

Words About Everyday Moments

I often write in my journal or the children’s journals about things they have said or experiences we have shared together. When you’re with the kids all day long (like many of us homeschool moms are), every hour can be filled with someone's life story just begging to be written down. Oh, for the time to capture them all!

Words of Encouragement

Life is busy and the demands that are placed upon family members can be overwhelming at times. When I’m really tired, just hearing “Thank you, Mom!” can lift my spirits and give me the strength I need to carry on. There are many opportunities to encourage one another with Scripture or words from our hearts on a regular basis. Let's not turn back from giving them freely to our loved ones. When we sustain the weary one with a word we also are sustained. “The Lord God has given me the tongue of disciples that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. The Lord was opened My ear; and I was not disobedient, Nor did I turn back.” (Isaiah 50:4-5 NASB)

Words of Blessing

When you record the hand of the Lord in your children’s lives you show them how real and personal He is - the God who is intimately acquainted with all their ways. You can impart this blessing to your children frequently and give them a living record of God’s faithfulness, and in doing so you will enable them to remember what God has done and preserve their spiritual heritage now and for future generations.

Words of Healing

At the heart of relationships are words - words expressed or waiting to be expressed. The words that give life, love, and encouragement are the words we give without regret, but sometimes our words are anything but life-giving. When we say the wrong thing and our child’s countenance falls, how can we restore the relationship? Besides saying “I’m sorry,” a written apology can heal deep wounds and be a powerful reminder of God’s grace.

Lately, as I've been transcribing one of my children's life stories or entering a word of encouragement in their journal, I’ve wondered how I can convey the joy I feel when I know that I am connecting with each one of them in such a profound way. I used to think journaling was an option, but I'm not so sure anymore. If there’s no record of your family’s walk with the Lord, what do your children have when they leave home to start families of their own? Memories only! What does the next generation have? A few impressions of their godly  heritage, that’s all! When I pondered this question these words came to me in the form of a poem.

No Words −By Jill Novak
I had a family but I kept no words

To describe the way their faces looked

Or the way they used to call my name.

I try to remember but it’s all so vague

My mind is old and cannot see

Beyond the veiled tapestry

The life I know I must have lived

Beyond recall and ever dim.

I ask myself, how can this be?
Oh, memory, how you fail me.

What Are Your Family’s Needs?

You don’t have to journal every day. Very few people do. But a funny thing happens when your senses are awaked to the significance of everyday moments - you wish you could capture them all. It is my hope that the Lord will birth a vision in you and your children for the possibilities of the gift of words. Every family is different. What is the Lord saying to your heart? What are your family’s needs? Listen and write what He would have you say to your loved ones.

what a fantastic idea

I used interactive jounaling when I was student teaching, with my mentor teachers. It didn't work very well then and I haven't thought about it since. Thank you for the idea. I will be sure to remember this one!!

you know what's sad. I know the past hurts that I have trouble getting past. And I have sought advice. I still don't know how to get past them.

Wonderful!

I have my 12 year old son keep a journal and I read it every few days. I make some practical writing comments, but then also respond to what he's written. It has been wonderful for us. For his 12th birthday he wrote, "The best birthday gift that I could get would be for my mom to get to feeling better". I was really struggling physically and it was taking a huge toll on us. I felt so down because of how I was "not pulling my own weight", but when I saw my son's heart in those words I knew that he didn't begrudge what we were going through or resent me for it. That was a wonderful gift to me. Even if we were getting behind with the bookwork, we were right on track with character training.
Blessings,
Nancy in KY

I love these ideas!

I put a small journal on the kitchen table a few months ago for anyone to write down thanks or praises in (to God or one another.) These ideas are even better! Thanks for sharing. God bless you! (I have 5 children too.)

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. I have various journals and my blog. My son loves to tell stories and I have been capturing those in a casual manner. I do need a better system. It was so much easier when I only had one to journal about! I feel my second baby is being shortchanged a bit.

I learn so much...

when I am here, Jill. Your words are beautiful, God-glorifying and so encouraging...and make me want to read more.
You have some wonderful ideas here--I want to embrace interactive journalling and commence more nature journalling--starting tomorrow!
Again, humble thanks,
Ann V.
