Through the Windowpane

Drawing Hollyhocks

The hollyhocks under my kitchen window finally bloomed this week. The pale green buds and delicate blossoms make them one of my favorite flowers to draw. I've been in love with hollyhocks for a long time, but this is the first time that I’ve grown them myself. After reading about them in author Sharon Lovejoy’s book Hollyhock Days, I realized that I, too, needed the companionship of hollyhocks.

I started my hollyhocks from seed last spring and transplanted them to the flower beds around the fourth of July. As with any other biennial, waiting for a plant to produce that you've sowed over a year ago can seem agonizingly slow. But when I heard the children exclaim, "Mom, mom, the hollyhocks have bloomed!" it was ample reward for all of my efforts.

Typically you see Hollyhocks straddling white picket fences or hugging the sides of barns or garages, but I didn't want my hollyhocks growing down by the grain barn where I wouldn't see them very much. Instead, I planted them under the kitchen and bedroom windows where I can enjoy them daily. Here are a few sketches I’ve made so far this season. For the most part I used a blunt Derwent watercolor pencil dry. The color is Crimson Lake 20 and Olive Green 51. I wrote about planting hollyhocks from seed last year. You can read and see the sketches that Elizabeth and I did there.

After interviewing nature journalist Richard Bell an English nature journalist, the kids and I are trying to journal more and we're sure enjoying ourselves. You can listen to this inspiring interview online. For ordering information visit our on-line workshops here. And don't miss our next workshop. It's coming up Thursday at 1:00 p.m. central time. Hope to see you and your children there.

Hi Mrs. Novak...

I really like hollyhocks. They are beautiful. I am going to make a list of what flowers I like, so I can remember what to plant at my home!!
*blush blush* That is so nice of you to say. I am honored to know you also. I believe God has put your family in our lives for a reason, and I thank Him for the plan He has for us.
I am sad for our generation. It breaks my heart that these girls don't know their value lies in more than just looking fashionable.
I know from experience what it is like being fashionable and cool, and yet not having the relationships with God and my family. I put looking "cool" before them both and it was a sad time in my life. I am so thankful I saw the truth and am now on my way to being what God wants.
A year I was not modest. So I have come a long way in a short time, which is wonderful. Just the other day, Mom asked me what happened that made me want to wear skirts, instead of my tight jeans. And since pondering that question, I think I have found the answer to be that I just decided that I wanted to please my mother and God by being modest in my dress, and am now working on my attitude. I just hope that by being modest other girls will see my stand and want to be modest also. I can only pray for these girls.
Thanks for stopping by!! It meant alot to me!!
Love,
!!SUPERANGEL!! !!Amanda!!

Hello from KY

How are you doing Jill? I hope you had a wonderful visit with your daughter back in May. I noticed you were mentioned on this blog... http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/ByHisGraceInColorado/341145 and thought I'd jump over to check out your blog. The last time I'd been here you hadn't posted in a while...I've have to start checking more often. I love the pics of the hollyhocks and your drawings are so pretty! Thanks for the inspiration!

Your hollyhocks are beautiful. I love the picture of them in front of the window. And the drawings are beautiful, too.
I have one of Sharon Lovejoy's gardening books-"Roots, Shoots, Buckets, and Boots."
We love it and can't wait for our sunflower house to finish growing.
I laughed our loud reading about your "memorial" pile. We have that exact same problem and it's also my fault. I have chronic back problems and do ask the kids to do some of the bending for me. It saves my back. But, they also tend to sweep their rooms and leave the pile, too. Holly

Inspiring!

Lovely, old fashioned flowers. Hollyhocks always make me think of my mother and her father - both fans of the flower too! Great sketches and photo.

Hollyhocks are one of my favorite flowers! My mom always had a clump growing in front of our window.
Enjoyed your blog. Lord bless, Theresa
