Through the Windowpane

The Song

It's 6:30 p.m. and the sun is setting. All of the sudden, the air is filled with the honks of hundreds of Canada geese arising from the field. Their song is heard for miles as it builds to a glorious crescendo. Each group of birds instinctively falls into "V" formation and circles the field before flying off in different directions. The sky is clear in minutes.

I wonder how the geese decide where to go at night? As the last rays of light give way to darkness, they find haven floating atop the lapping waves of nearby ponds and lakes. For the next week they will return every morning to pick the harvested field clean. And every evening, as dusk approaches they leave – until they come no more.

My family has grown accustomed to the presence of the geese in the fall, but we refuse to take them for granted. When the honking starts, I rush outside and gaze up at the majestic bodies flying overhead. Soon the screen door bangs and the children run to join me. We watch spellbound as the birds take off, and then I tell them a secret, “If the geese fly low enough you can hear their hearts beating.” They laugh.
I raise my arms and wave wildly toward the sky. “Hello, hello! I’m here! I love you!” Tears spring to my eyes. I'm crazy! I sound like a five-year-old…but I can’t help it. I want to tell the geese how I feel.
In the shelter of the barn, our own geese stir as they hear my voice rise on the frosty air. Their honks join those of the wild ones as if to say, "Fly high…fly free, for me." And standing in awe, with my arms outstretched, I can only echo their cry.

Awsome

How totally awsome to live where you can see the geese flying by....how l long to live in the country, but for now we live in the suburbs of a large city, this is where God has brought us for now for various reasons - but He is so good and has given me a tiny little piece of garden where I so often enjoy watching the birds bathing in the flowing water of the fountain.

I agree!

There is a pond near our house, and in the fall and early spring flocks of geese will come to it. I count the sight and sound of geese in flight as one of life's great enjoyments.

Hi, Jill!

We enjoy this time of year, too. We dont' have huge flocks of geese that fly over our property, but we do have some that fly over head. It is so interesting to see them flying in formation and marvel at God's creation.

Also, I am interested in hearing more about your products. Would you add me to your business e-mail list?

Thanks! Have a blessed day! Tami

I love the way YOU write!!

I'm sitting here with tears running down my cheeks...I'm there Jill... That's how I feel today too...fly high, fly free, for me... I love them! Reminds me of the movie "Fly Away Home", which also makes me bawl.:-) I agree, your words are worth more than the pic...I saw more...but the pic is a nice accompaniment. Happy Fall, blessed harvest-time, and peace to you and yours as you're looking toward blessed new beginnings...

Awesome sight

Though I haven't experienced as much (or maybe I haven't paused long enough to notice), you are certainly blessed. In our own little worlds, everyone should watch the wonders of God in motion and appreciate the strokes He has made on this round canvas.
