August 7, 2006 - The Sign of a Successful Party

Well, in China, anyway! :-) Why do Chinese people take their shoes off at the door? Because it's DIRTY, filthy dirty outside. And you don't want that filth inside your house. It's that simple. Now that I'm accustomed to it, I cringe when I watch an American movie with people wearing shoes in their carpeted homes and even, horrors, ON THE BED!

LOL! That is so funny! It kinda looks like our garage, but not that MANY shoes.
BTW, tonigh my DD5 asked how Chinese people sleep. She asked if they slept sitting up. I told her they sleep on mattresses, but maybe on the floor. Was I right??? I told her I would consult with my blogging friend who lives in China...I reminded her of the photos we had viewed on your blog.

We are still getting the hang of removing our shoes at the door. My kids always wait until we are at the door with our shoes on to leave to announce they forgot to go to the potty and they have to go NOW!
PS- Our bed here in China is like a Western bed. Although VERY hard. My DH says it feels like it is just a box spring! I had to go buy an extra thick pad to help make ours more comfortable. When we get back to the states I may have to sleep on the floor because I will be use to the hard beds here!

Taking off shoes before entering a home was standard fare when we lived overseas. It is such a good idea! I wonder if Americans are the only ones who walk inside with shoes. When we moved back to the States I had grand ideas of making people removed their shoes. Someone it didn't work. Oh, well.
I'm glad you had a great party!

That is a great idea. Most people do when they come into my house...I'm not sure why, but I like it. I spent last week at a friend's house in Delaware and we always took our shoes off at the door. Do they take off their shoes when they enter public establishments in China as well?

you know, in Alaska (and IN Papua new Guinea where I grew up) we always took off our shoes.
When I lived in Arizona, I could never get used to leaving my shoes on... :)

I don't know what I expected. Maybe 3rd world accomodations but that floor is be-u-tiful!! It looks like a nice apartment in Manhattan or something. Right now we let shoes in the house but someday....when I get new carpet we are moving to the no-shoes rule. It really is disgusting when you think about it.

I wish everyone would leave their shoes at the door. I have friends that do and others that just don't get it. Some children like to visit the barn area and then come inside... it's a chore to train other peoples childfren that barn yuck is not allowed in my house.
Thanks for sharing the way life is in China -- without shoes : )
Blessings,
Maria

I don't know why or when we developed the habit, but NONE of us wear our shoes in the house. I keep a large basket by the front door to catch the day's shoes. (Actually, my boys only wear one pair, so their shoes tend to reside here.)
Even my kids' friends and MY friends take off their shoes when they come to my house! :)
