March 19, 2007 - Pineapples

One of the many things about living in China that I've come to appreciate is having seasonal fruits. In America, it's just not the same.  You can get most every fruit at most anytime of the year.  But here fruits and vegetables follow their natural seasons.  You can't buy strawberries, peaches, or mangoes year-round.  You  have to wait for them to come in season. That means many benefits to the consumer -- affordable prices because the market is flooded with the same fruit and delicious RIPE fruits.

Right now, the streets are full of pineapple vendors.  They are so pretty that they look like art!

Here is a vendor peeling the pineapple. They way they cut out the spines saves every available bite of delicious fruit.  Very little is wasted!  Don't we all love fresh pineapple?  But the work involved in peeling it is just too much trouble!  I can get a medium sized pineapple, peeled and ready to eat for 7 RMB (that's about $.90).  I love China.
