One Child Policy Homeschool

March 25, 2007 - Chinese Lessons

I was in a local bookstore recently and guess what childhood classic I saw translated into Chinese?  Ramona Quimby, Age 8!  :-)

Did I snatch that up?  Yes I did!

We have it in English too, but DD hasn't read it yet.

I decided to make the transition to novels with her Chinese lessons.  We have a college student come to our home two or three times a week to play with and read to DD.  They are to read books for 40 minutes each lesson.  DD can choose the books (so long as they are Chinese of course).  Well, she was complaining that she needed some new books; everything  had been read over and over.  After looking on the shelf, I had to agree.  It had been quite some time since I'd bought any Chinese books.  And almost everything we had was picture books.

So I went shopping for juvenile novels.  She's ready for that step.  Her Chinese is really amazing!  And by being read to at a level above what she can totally understand, she'll grow in her vocabulary!  (Hmmm.. maybe I should sit in on the reading.  I could use the help too!)

What do they do during their lessons beside read?  Well, they play with toys, do crafts, or go outside.  For example, on Friday they went on a scavenger hunt I wrote out for them.  They came back with about a hundred tadpoles, twenty tiny shrimp, and three even smaller fish!  Yes, we live in the city, but our apartment complex has a nice man-made river/lake/pretty water thingy.  I have found that this type of play -- a natural and fun interaction -- is an excellent way for DD to learn.  She looks forward to her "lessons" and learns so much practical language simply through playing.  Her teacher also comments that it's the easiest and most fun job she's ever had!  Horray!  A win-win situation!
