August 29, 2007 - Pigs' Feet

As most of you know, I'm a Southern girl. I have found that my rural upbringing has helped me to deal with life in China. For example, Southerners are known to eat strange foods such as chittlins (intestines), chicken livers, and pickled pig's feet.

Although I've never seen pickled pig's feet here in China, I have often seen braised pig's feet.

Because I grew up in the South where it was not unheard of to eat organ meats or "strange" parts of the pig or cow, I've never been disgusted by seeing these sights. To be honest, I don't buy pig feet for my family, but we certainly have eaten these types of things with friends.

And I do love fried chicken livers and gizzards. It's one dish that surprisingly I've never seen in China. So I really look forward to eating it on our visits to America! (Now you know that I really AM a "country girl.")

What "strange" foods you are willing to admit are your favorites?

And if you're thinking that your tastes in food are just "normal" foods,  let me remind you that  many Chinese people think cheese is quite disgusting. :-) So it's all relative!

my hubby and I both used to enjoy fried chicken gizzards but unfortunately now that we've started only doing organic chicken - we haven't had any ---- funny, since organic chickens have gizzards too! why don't they sell them at the store - bummer! glad you're back :)

The one thing I am embarrassed to admit, but secretly love is SPAM ("Stuff Posing As Meat"). I will not touch a hotdog and bologna makes me shudder, but there is nothing like a fried SPAM sandwich (ooh, and canned corned beef too!)!

Thanks for letting me "out" myself, LOL! Love your blog!

Yes, I recently found this out about the cheese thing. We had some Chinese visitors over to our house, and one girl looked so distressed that cheese was on her plate. She ate every last bit of it, but looked liked she was going to be sick! :) I didn't find out until later that they didn't care for cheese...
The weirdest thing I like is pork rinds. So horrible for you but so crunchy and good. I'm a southern girl, too, but I have say no way to chicken livers or gizzards. Blech! :)

Ok...I haven't eaten this lately, but I used to eat with relish "black pudding", or blood pudding.

These days I loooove raw salmon. Mmmmmm, sashimi. =)

My Mum in her youth used to ADORE Tripe and Onions.
mmmm, yummy. Gack.

Interesting! I have never tried pickled pigs feet, but they used to sell them in large jars in Baltimore. I've always thought myself pretty brave at ingesting new foods, but that was too much of an ewwww food. Living in Kazakstan for a few years ALmost made me a vegetarian--there is something to be said for cutlets of meat that look nothing like the animal you saw at the farm the other day...hmmm this doesn't sound brave at all--I might have to re-cast myself as a picky eater here (ack!) (:

I do like chicken stomachs if they are cooked right.... my children love fish heads and when we are with our Singaporean friends the competition is on to see who has eaten the most fish eyes... Something that is eaten here which I could never try is the reproductive organs of male animals.... sorry if this is inappropriate for your blog but it is actually a delicacy in places....

I'm also a southern girl and have enjoyed fried gator tail, BBQ goat, and fried hog jowls. However to the shame of my family, I just cant handle boiled okra or pigs feet ;-)

September 1, 2007 - Sweetbreads

My mom used to make fried sweetbreads when I was a kid. I haven't seen them in regular grocery stores, but have been tempted to see if I could find some to cook. They are slightly grisley, but smooth and delicious. I'm a liver/gizzard girl too.

Foods.. well mostly I like ice cream. Do they eat ice cream in China or is that like cheese?

Hope you are having a blessed day!

I LOVE chicken livers, beef liver, scrapple, and haggis. Which is Scottish, it's oatmeal, liver, other bits and pieces mixed up and packed into a sheep's stomach and then cooked. It's delicious!

Sorry, i've lived in the South all my life and i have never had any desire to eat any of those things.

Greens and fried green tomatoes and good old BBQ are about as far as i go down that road.

I did eat squirrel mulligan once. My husband killed and prepared it. I would eat it again if i HAD to, but it was a bit grisly to me. I ate dove a couple days ago, but that's not very adventurous.
