July 13, 2007 - Fun in Xian -- The Drum Tower and The Bell Tower

No tourist trip to Xian is complete without a visit to the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower right in the heart of the city. From the top floors of these buildings, you can see a nice view of modern, downtown Xian.

I love the way Xian is planned in very orderly roads traveling north-south and east-west. The city wall surrounding the city has several gates which also serve as location markers. For example, "I want to go to XYZ beside the south gate."

Smack in the center of the city is this lovely bell tower. In ancient times, it was used to communicate the hour to the citizens, warn them of danger, and signal victories.

Inside we watched a lovely performance of bells and other traditional Chinese musical instruments.

A few hundred yards away from the Bell Tower is the Drum Tower.

Drum Tower

Rows and rows of drums to communicate to the people of Xian.
Of course, now it's just a slice of history and a popular tourist attraction. For a small price, you can beat the drums yourself.

Did you guys beat the drums too? And I wonder how many tourists are there, and from what countries. Do you meet many other Americans?

I have enjoyed catching up on your blog, Jimmie. I am so grateful to be able to show my children pictures of China. So very interesting...
I just finished reading a biography of Ruth Bell Graham. I don't know if you knew this or not, but she was raised in China. The first part of her book was incredible to read about, and I couldn't help but think of you.

Just wondering how you like your NOEO Physics so far. Out of the three-- biology, chemistry, physics-- the physics sounds the most interesting, bearable and doable to me.

It's weird how I'm a bit scienced out when I didn't even DO much of it with the kids this past year!
