August 7, 2007 - Pirate Lapbook

This is an updated entry. New information is at the top.

My Unit Study based on the novel Pirate Diary won a prize in the Homeschool Share Back to School Blast Contest!  Horray!

The link to my unit is here.

And another GREAT pirate unit using 3 different books is here. Wow! These are great pirate resources, especially if you want some lapbook templates! And they are FREE!

Browse around the contest page. There are LOADS of valuable lesson plans, reproducibles, and more!

The pirate lapbook is now finished!

and see the Pirate Lapbook Set.

I think that DD's female (L) and male (R) pirates on the cover are adorable. She had made these drawings just for fun, but I thought they were so nice that she should use them somehow in the lapbook. So we discarded the beautiful full color image of a sailing ship we had saved for the cover and used these funny pirates instead.

This was a supplemental unit study I added into the Sonlight Core 2 we're using. (We're on week 30 -- there's light at the end of the tunnel!) The SL material just briefly mentioned pirates, but we did a more indepth study using mainy these resources:

1.  Pirate Diary a novel by Richard Platt, illustrated by Chris Riddell.
This is the same author-illustrator duo that wrote Castle Diary. They are both excellent living books for teaching history. I feel that Pirate Diary is a bit more of a naturally flowing story than Castle Diary. In the back of each book there is additional factual information.

2. Amy Pak of Homeschool in the Woods Time Travelers New World Explorers Unit Study CD (the lessons about pirates)
I am so impressed with this resource! It's well worth the $30 price tag. It's chock full of information, printables, lapbooking, games, and hands-on activities. We used her pirate games for our lapbook.

3.  various online resources
some of the better links are as follows:
General pirate information
Pirates of the Carribean
Pirates! Fact and Legend
Pirates and Privateers

Other fun links
A Map of the Caribbean
Songs of the Sea

This is so timely. I am hoping to do a Pirate class for our co-op this fall. Thanks so much for sharing your resources. I wish I knew how to do a lapbook. I tried once and it failed.

Your daughter is quite the little artist!
I'm not a huge pirate fan, but I'm very impressed with her drawings~ too cute!
You are such an organized homeschooling mom.

It is just amazing to me that you came up with all of this! Tell me, how long did it take you to complete this unit? And was it the only thing you were doing for school at the time, since it covers all of the major subjects?

Congratulations on your win! Homeschool Share is such a wonderful resource. Thank you for sharing you and your daughters hard work. May I put a link to your blog in our local county's homeschooling newsletter? I think it would be a great blessing and encouragement for others to see what you and your family are doing.
Happy schooling,
Robinlyn
