One Child Policy Homeschool

• October 18, 2007 - Orchestra Lapbook

Posted in Lapbooks
Although this lapbook is still in progress, I'm posting our pictures and links anyway. We're doing a quick overview of music history by studying one composer each week. We still have a few more composer mini-books to add.

It's far too fast for a CM styled composer study. But it's a great introduction that this musially illiterate mom really needs for planning our indepth composer studies for the next two years.

I plan to use the Opal Wheeler biographies of famous composers along with recordings of their music. AND....I'm so thrilled! I just landed a complete, used Beautiful Feet History of Classical Music unit study for half price! I'll just pick and choose from it as we do a CM styled composer study. (My favorite used book sources are Vegsource and Homeschool Classifieds. )

(Why am I saying "next year?" We are taking a visit to USA soon. I will bring back many homeschool resources for the next two years! We'll start using this new curriculum in January. I am so excited! New books!)

Clicking the pictures will take you to the Flickr photo set.

I've accumulated many links and online resources at this new Squidoo lens:  Classical Music Unit Study or Lapbook.

Below I've listed what we actually used for our study of
the instrument families of the orchestra.

Classics for Kids -- listen online
Young Person's Guide to Orchestra
Part 1 and 2

Peter and the Wolf
listen online for free if you don't have the CD
PDF -- Peter and Wolf instruments printable from Dallas Symphony Orchestra

Kiddie Records
Rusty in Orchestraville -- listen online or download MP3 files
2005 March/ Week 10

Montessori Music
Printable cards of instruments and composers

Dallas Symphony Orchestra
instruments of orchestra with sound files; orchestra seating charts for Baroque, Classical and Modern
also from Dallas Symphony Orchestra -- Lesson plans
Brass Instruments Uncoiled Handout -- made into a layered book

Homeschool Helper Online
Orchestra lapbook templates

Instrument Storage Room at NY Philharmonic
fun interactive program great for even smallest children
Instruments of the Orchestra
listen and then match
sounds to instruments

Musical Clip art sheets
Discovery School Music Clip art images

Of course there are many more things I found but didn't actually use. The Music Unit Study page has more details.

Your lapbooks always look so rich with information. How do you store them for the future, if you keep them all. I am wondering what to do with all of our "products". My MIL has all of her last born's papers from K-college in her basement. That is just one child. And he doesn't want them now! I take pictures of some things and then quietly send them on their way. But these lapbooks look like they'd be worth saving.

Your lapbooks are AMAZING!
(And, being a former 'music major' I especially like the last one!) ;-)

God Bless,

I agree. One a week is much too fast. I think we will go back and work them into our history curriculum. That will be a better speed. Your lapbook looks great. We are working on composer/music lapbooks too, but ours are much less original than yours- mostly the templates from the homeschool helper unit. I might add in a few things using the links you provided. Then again . . . maybe we'll just add more another time. We are really enjoying the classics for kids shows. I've had that site marked for years, but never got around to listening before.

All of your fabulous ideas deserve a standing ovation. I'm digging back into our Classical Music studies. I've let them slide terribly this year.

Thank you SO much for these great ideas Jimmie.
If your travels back to the states leads you near Iowa, I'd love to meet you in person.

I loved this lapbook. We've tried some this past summer. Check out this post about it. Although the pictures doesn't show much but you get the idea.

You are a breath of inspiration! Thanks so much for sharing! It's been far too long since we made a lapbook, I need to remedy that!
So when you come to the US, will you be anywhere near Indiana? :) I'd even drive to PA or Northern VA if you might be close. :) or Illinois, Ohio, ....

We just studied composers too and I found a great series called Getting to know the world's greatest composers by Mike Venezia. Great for the K-2nd grade group with lots of comic book type illustrations along with real life art. I learned so much and am EVEN learning to appreciate classical music myself - knew there was a reason I started hsing! To fill in the holes in my own education!

About Me

~^~Homeschooling my only child with a somewhat Charlotte Mason approach and a healthy dose of lapbooks, crafts, and field trips. ~^~Showcasing my photography hobby by sharing images of life in China. ~^~Why "One Child Policy Homeschool"? I happen to have an only child, and I live in China. It is just my attempt at a witty name for the blog.
