September 13, 2007 - This Week's Nature Walk

We had our nature walk Tuesday afternoon. It was mainly plants and bugs again since we stayed in our apartment complex. But we were pleased to identify a tree -- the hornbeam also called blue beech.  Actually, I think it is the Chinese beech (imagine that!). But I can't find a lot about the Chinese beech online.

Our particular tree looked like a "tiger" -- the bark's ridges were orange!

DD doesn't like to do her nature journal during the nature walk. She's too busy catching butterflies! So we're doing them at home on regular copy paper and putting them in a notebook with sleeves.

Do you let your children go out like ragamuffins? I do! But in China, if you have clothes that are not torn and are clean, you're okay. The standards are quite different. So no one here would think anything of her pink head scarf, blue shirt, black pants, and red socks!

I'm determined to get some field guides while I am in America this fall. We are so clueless and I hate not having reference materials!

Very cool pics! We fill in our pages when we get home also. The kids are just to busy exploring to bother writing anything down.

Have a blessed day!

Beautiful pics! I love how detailed your daughter gets in her notebook pages. Ahem, that doesn't happen much here. Although we do like leaf rubbings and taking pictures. That is better than nothing, I suppose!

Yeah! Lovely job! My DD dresses herself in a similar manner. I told her yesterday that she looked like an orphan, quite a complement to her as her dream is to adopt an orphan or serve orphans in some way when she grows up. (Sometimes I think she wishes she was an orphan.) I am really enjoying our nature study walks too. Your daughter's journal is very interesting and well done. I must confess, I started a nature journal on paper and am really struggling. I am not an artist and I can't seem to please myself! I want to quit! I want to just stick to my nature blog, but I think I must go on, otherwise what am I teaching my kids!!!!

Wow! Those flowers are beautiful! And is that bank covered in clover? BTW, how DO you take such great pictures of bugs? Mine always come out blurry.

You certainly don't have to be jealous of my yard. After all, you're living in CHINA. How many of us have had the opportunity to study nature on two different continents?

September 16, 2007 - WONDERFUL!

First, yes, but daughter can often be seen in clothing you call "ragamuffin", we call it "personal style." LOL

Ragamuffin in our household means unkempt hair that looks like you combed it with a rake then rolled around in the yard. LOL Mixing prints & colors for clothing are part of the process (i think) of finding out what looks good together, what goes well, what makes you feel good about yourself.

YOur nature pictures are lovely. The tree you identified was really neat with that orange striped bark! How cool!

i found this page that lists field guides for Asia http://www.library.uiuc.edu/bix/fieldguides/insects.htm#asi Don't know if America field guides would be very helpful in China????

Have a great week and tell your DD I really liked her nature journal entry!
