private booth We finished our study of Toulouse-Lautrec, and I allowed my daughter to select one of his paintings to reproduce.

This is the one she chose --In the Private Booth.

While she worked on her version, I tried to help with suggestions without being too critical. That's such a fine line.

My DD is so creative that sometimes it's hard to get her to copy something. When I point out something like, "The bow isn't exactly like that." She will say, "Well, it should be. So I changed it."

I frequently have these conversations with her about times to be creative and times  just to copy.

Why do I use this activity with each artist? I think that asking her to reproduce the art causes her to look in detail at the original.

We are just in Year 1 this year and we are following the artist rotation at the AO site ... I don't think I'll make DS draw this year but I did tell him that after 2 weeks of having the same picture up I will ask him to tell me what's in the picture....but in the future he will try his hand at drawing it with colored pencils .... and you should have seen the WHAT look on his face...LOL

Great job on the reproduction!

It really is a fine line between suggestions and creative freedom. I think it's great that she tweaks things to make it beautiful to HER. After all, if you see no beauty in it, it's not really art.

OK, now that we have nature study firmly in place, I am inspired by you to try the picture study. I guess I will go find out where to begin by looking at your links. Thank you. Your daughter reminds me of my daughter. Coloring books were not ever big hits here. I would love to see how my children would copy a work of art.

I took art history for two years. I loved that class--I learned about art and history both in ways that never made sense before.

One of the things we had to do was copy the art on to index cards. The back included the details of that work. We made about 10-30 cards a week, so ours were rough pencil sketches.

We had to be able to identify the artist, name of the piece, and time period for cards from our ever-growing stack of cards in a personal weekly quiz.

I disliked drawing (and did a poor job too), so I used a copier and cut and pasted one set. My teacher let it slide that week but made me do them over. She told me that the drawing--no matter how poor--was still a part of the learning process.

So, I think there is actually more going on than just paying attention to detail.

Great idea!! And she did an awesome job with her copy--way better than I could have done!! :D
