One Child Policy Homeschool

November 6, 2007 - Potatoes

Walking home from the botanical gardens, we saw these children whose moms were serving up cooked potatoes nearby. This older one was actually helping out by peeling potatoes.

Here are the moms. On the left is a spicy rice/potato mixture. (Closer view below.) These starchy foods are very inexpensive -- about 25 cents per serving.

Working ladies often wear sleeve covers to protect their clothes. Very smart!

Yes, we do eat these foods every now and then. On a cool day, the smells of warm food cooking outdoors are very tempting! Besides filling your stomach, the food often serves as a hand warmer.

I often wonder if folks who do a lot of traveling have toughen up their stomachs to take the....how shall we say, less than perfect conditions the food sometimes is in.

I for one am a noodle fanatic. Thai noodles are my favorite food ever. (well, I enjoy a good cake too) But I would fear the germs a bit. I just wonder if traveling families like missionaries end up being resistant to those bugs.

just a thought I had while reading your blog. :)

That totally makes me hungry right now!

And those kids are SO adorable! I have a soft spot for Asian kids... and elderly ones too... Reminds me of my grandparents and cousins. *sigh*

It seems odd to see a child peeling potatoes outside!
I am wondering if there are any rules or regulations regarding their cooking and selling food on the streets.

What else is mixed in with the potatoes. That looks really good. Those chickens behind add to the interest of the picture as well. Are they feral?

November 8, 2007 - one question....

That looks yummy but are the chickens running around in the background for the soup they'll serve later? :)
When we visit mexico we are warned about not buying from the street venders (due to the water and health issues), does the same apply in china?
love the photos on life where you are!!
