November 25, 2007 - Walk Down Restaurant Row Part 2

And to continue our walk down restaurant row, here are three photographs.

Dishes are usually washed outside in dishpans on the ground. These ladies have a slightly more sophisticated method -- using a tile-lined sink. Although they use soap, the water is always cold. (Hot water is reserved only for showering or for making tea!)

A view of the street and the side by side shops.

Below is another cook at work over his wok. Tarps are used to divide the stalls,  to shield from sun, or to create a rooftop.

Are we missing the food in China? No. Not yet. It probably will happen, but we've been back only two weeks. It is strange to me that my memories of American food are better than reality. We were so excited about Olive Garden and Shoneys, for example. The experience was a real let down. The food seems bland or limp or too salty. But I've yet to be disappointed by Mexican food. It just gets better and better.

I had my daily Mexican fix today. Oh, it was heavenly. As good as traditional Thanksgiving dinner was, it really was not nearly as satisfying as a good Mexican combination platter.

I can make my own Italian... but Mexican food? There's nothing better than our local favorite-- El Ranchero. Mmmm... This cold weather makes me want it even more!

So are you going to bring a giganto block of cheese back to China with you?

We have a really good Mexican restaurant near here. Too bad you can't visit (Dayton, Ohio). Thanks for showing the pictures of the Chinese food stalls. It's really interesting and educational! :)

Yes, I love the pictures. Keep them coming! You live a fascinating life. You are right about American food being bland or too salty. I like home cooking better!

I can totally relate to the memories of food being better than actuality. I have been disappointed on numerous occassions to try something after not having had it for a while. It rarely satisfies! Funny how our mind works like that!
Enjoy your Mexican! :)

Hi- wow! I haven't visited your blog in ages and I find out you are stateside! heeheehee. I am on dial up and I love to see the photos you post but I have been "busy" with life and did not feel like I had time for dial up so I was skipping your blog. Have a terrific time while you are here! Thanks for your insights into both cultures....how about the funny money ? The new paper bills we are printing and have been printing look so fake to me! Enjoy those tacos...

Mexican food is my very favorite too. Living in Arizona we can get lots of it! I think we have tacos about once a week. :)
