November 17, 2007 - Update on Us

We had a LONG trip, but we are in America. It's great!
How does USA look to my eyes?
  • big, spacious, and flat -- I can see the sky because there are no tall buildings. There are so few people around. The store aisles are wide. Homes are huge.
  • clean and bright -- The sky is clear and light bulbs are high wattage!
  • the land of plenty -- Supermarkets and restaurants are overwhelming because of all the choices.
  • people are so friendly and polite-- No one stares at me (well, not until I say something dumb -- see story below). People say excuse me, say thank you, and hold the door.
And how do I look to America? Very strange. I asked the clerk at Subway sandwiches for my stamps (remember the collect 8 and get a free 6" sandwich?). They haven't done that since Dec. 05. Then when he gave me my change, I said it was too little. He informed me that the coin I thought was a quarter was in fact a dollar. Everyone in the store looked at me as if I were Rip Van Winkle. Yeah, I feel like it a bit. Clueless and unsure of myself. I am relearning how to use debit machines and how to interact with people.

November 17, 2007 - strange curriencies

A similar thing happened to me about 7 years ago when I went back after they were rolling out the new design on the bills and the new quarters. I thought the guy was giving me fake money and didn't want it. I had to trust that guy because I sure didn't believe him at that moment.

Hope you all enjoy your time in the Sates!

You came back to the US and think people are friendly, etc. When I came back from Vietnam, I found the people here to be alot more rude! Maybe it's the difference in the length of our stays in foreign countries. I just really learned to appreciate the simple-ness of Vietnam.
Hope you enjoy your time here!

I live in another 'western' country and I still feel just as out of it when I get back to the states! I too am overwhelmed by everything, I too ask questions that people think are dumb, I too have to get used to the money all over again! Welcome to what I like to call 'Re-culture shock' !! Enjoy your visit!

Thanks for this insight into your culture shock. I can remember returning to the States after just two months in Germany... a country much more like the U.S. than China -- that's an understatement! Anyway, I remember thinking the green interstate signs looked strange to me. In Germany, the autobahn signs are blue. I didn't think I had spent that much time on the autobahn, but perhaps it was from the staus (sp?) (aka traffic jams) on our way to Switerland.

Glad you're able to be in the U.S. for awhile.

The change thing isn't dumb on your part, just odd on their part. I rarely (if ever) get change with the dollar coins!

LOL about the high wattage bulbs. When we move into a house, the first thing I do is change out all the bulbs to 100W.

I was also happy to get away from the over-abundance of flourescent light bulbs. My uncles apartment in Busan, Korea had this one really sad but BRIGHT flourescent bulb right in the middle of the living room. Very popular over here-- y'know, because it is efficient and all.

Anyhoo, welcome home!!!

November 18, 2007 - Too Funny

Posted by dgallew

I cleaned my pocketbook out last night and what did I find Subway stamps and a funny looking coin. One filled book ready to be redeemed and It was a dollar from our trip home this spring. YIpee. Can you tell we aren't in the US either. haha

The funniest thing we thought while in the US is why are there so many overhead power lines and there weren't enough people. We felt quite lonely if there wasn't a crowd of people pressing in on you both in the stores and on the road. It made me nervous to drive with so much room in my own lane. I kept waiting for 3 or 4 other people to share it with me. hehe

Enjoy your visit.

I guess that would make you feel like you were waking up after a long "nap". Glad to hear that you are enjoying being back in America. Although I've really enjoyed reading about your adventures in China. Reading your blog is the closest we'll probably ever get to being there. :-)

Welcome home. =) I hope you and your family have a really wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas. =)

How is Sprite coping with it all? Hopefully she's getting used to everything and thoroughly enjoying herself.

Culture shock can sometimes be a wonderful thing - like several years ago when we came back from Germany we pulled into a petrol station and I was like "We don't have enough money!!!" My husband said "What are you talking about? I have $10."

I got that stomach-lurch when everything kind of spins a bit in your head and you feel slightly out-of-whack...and then I realized that "Oh yeah, it doesn't cost $100 to fill your petrol tank here..." =Þ

I live in the Middle East, I am so used to and comfortable with open air markets with meat hanging on hooks all over the place. After a five year absence from the country I grew up in, we went back for a visit. My sister took me to a huge mall and she kept telling me to stop gaping. I had serious sensory overload and made many a social faux pas. More recently we just went on a 2 week trip to a country in the UK. Such a culture shock, it is so beautiful and clean and pretty and fresh and lovely and the people are so friendly and quiet. Am I saying I know kind of what you are going through and what it feels like?
Have a wonderful time.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
