January 21, 2008 - Winter Ice Play
She is fascinated by icicles even if they are hanging from cars! But more fun and beautiful are the ice leaves. The ice leaves actually show the imprints of the veins!
This tree right in front of our building

creates ice leaves like this, a double

and this, a triple.

This tree's curly leaves made delicate, curved ice leaves.

Sprite says this is her favorite plant for finding ice leaves.

You can see why. What a huge ice leaf! And look at that detail!

She told me that the leaves with insect holes create ice leaves with holes in them. Wow! She's really observing carefully. This is play, but it's learning at the same time. It's worth braving the nasty weather to go outside and experience nature. Charlotte Mason said that bad weather was no excuse for not having nature walks. She's right! I'm cold inside anyway; why not go out and have some fun? I'm terribly cold natured. But the fun we have really does take my mind off the cold. And when I go back indoors to my 50 degree home, it seems toasty!
More ice leaves from a long, spiky leaved plant.

And one last plant.

Its ice makes for great fun. Watch the video to see it.

Oh, I just love seeing the ice leaves! I'll have to show my son! He would love going on a walk with you! I thought you might like to see what is going on at my blog concerning Wildflowers in Winter. I'm having a different theme about wildflowers every week until March 12. It would be fun to see wildflowers from China to mix with those from the states. The last week of February, there will be a contest for kids on Wildflower art. Now, if I'm not mistaken you can read blogger, but just can't comment, right? If you want to participate, read the details, and then make your own post on your blog, then email the url to me, and I will post it in the Mr. Linky for you, so you can be entered in the drawing. www.joyinthemorninglight.blogspot.com

We rarely get ice where we live (near the coast in Texas) and I'm fine with that. :) However, I'd be willing to put up with it to see some of those ice leaves. Neat!

That is so cool!! I have never seen that before. When plants here get covered in ice they are always completely encased in it so you can't peel it off :) Cute video to *grin*

These are the coolest things I've seen in a while- thanks for sharing! We don't get to enjoy this kind of winter beauty in FL. This is the first time I've commented but I've enjoyed following your blog and all your homeschool adventures for a while now.

Very cool! We had an ice storm last year (but no ice leaves!). As much destruction as it brought, it was so beautiful to look at. It looked like everything was wrapped in shiny cellophane.
Stay warm!

That is so cool! God is truely an artist, isn't he? It reminds me of the lyrics of my favorite Billy Sprague song:
"Look at the sun painting the sky,
It's a love affair of atmosphere and light.
God can make a masterpiece every day."

What great pictures of ice leaves! I don't think I have ever seen such things. I added your post to my little "winter carnival" post. It added such an international flair. :)
Thanks for posting.

Isn't that too cool. We had ice this morning also in Southern Missouri but I don't think our leaves looked anything like that. 50* in the house, brrrr, I would be cold too. We have our wood furnace and fireplace going non-stop and sometimes that isn't warm enough. lol Have a great day.

BBBBRRRR!!! You are making me feel very bad now. If you can go out when there is ICE on the leaves, then surely I can go out when the temps dip below 40! Well... can't I send the kids out and just observe them from the window?
LOVE the snowstorm Sprite created! She has the cutest voice!

I loved these pictures! I didn't know you could take ice off a plant and hold it in your hand (in the shape of a leaf) without it breaking.
You're right. You're daughter is learning while it seeming just like fun stuff. Neat!

This would be a great submission for the current Charlotte Mason Blog Carnival.
The Charlotte Mason Blog Carnival topics center around CM educational philosophy and the practical application of Miss Mason's works. So many people claim they have difficulty with Nature Study a la CM in winter time. This post was a fantastic example !!
Details can be found here: http://blogcarnival.com/bc/cprof_2378.html
God Bless.
