One Child Policy Homeschool

February 24, 2008 - A Peek into our Latest with Winter Promise

Winter Promise is working well for us! I am very satisfied with my purchase. (And that's a good thing since I bought two years' worth of WP!) Here is Sprite engrossed in Pocahontas and the Strangers.

Here are two images of our timeline notebook. It's also a notebook timeline!  What I mean is that it's a timeline in a notebook. And also, mixed among the timeline pages are notebooking pages. These two are examples of what comes with the American Story 1 program. They are very different from what I have considered notebooking pages. Usually Sprite does the writing. But these are very simple -- mostly drawing or coloring instead of writing. Of course, we'll still do some "regular" style notebooking with Sprite doing the writing.

See Columbus carrying a cross onto the New World?

This book Southwest Indians is so fun! And so easy for me! I simply photocopy the project pages, we color, cut, and assemble. Voila! The crafts are really meaningful, that is, they teach something.

We've been adapting some of the projects to put into the notebook. For example, this  is a 3-D diorama. We flattened it and glued it onto cardstock.

Homeschooling went amazingly well this past week. What a blessing. There was no complaining, just patient work. It's still a holiday here (for Chinese New Year), so each afternoon or evening Sprite has had opportunity to play with local friends. My guess is that the time with her friends was a good motivator to do her work well (and quickly).

I like how you flattened your diorama to put into the notebook. We're using the Colonial America book in the same series right now, and I hadn't quite figured out how to save the dioramas. Great idea!

noticing how much your daughter has grown. She looks a lot older for some reason in this picture.

I never thought about it before, but I guess we will all get to see our blogger friends and their children - grow up - so to speak online ;-)

Hope you have another great week.

I like the timeline notebook too! I started one in a sketchpad last year and then realised that when I was tired I had started numbering pages incorrectly and got frustrated!!! I (literally) threw the thing in the back of the cupboard and forgot about it. Maybe it is time to get it out and fixed now. Thanks for the reminder to get it sorted out! Timelines are so great for kids to get a picture of true history.

My boys love showing off their dioramas! Plus, they sit very easily on top of a bookshelf for all to see. It will be tough throwing it away one day... but I just don't have room to save everything.

I thought Pocahontas and the Strangers was a great book!

When you get to the read-aloud The Fighting Ground beware of some curse words (including God's name in vain) and a pretty vivid scene of death on page 80-something. I would've appreciated some warning but the boys didn't seem to notice the first curse word that slipped out of my mouth! Oi. I will start scanning ahead in our read-alouds after that one!

Friends can be a good motivator. By the way, Grace is very excited to have Sprite visit her blog.

I've just read through all of your Winter Promise posts. Thanks for sharing these! I'm considering buying AH1 to finish off the year. We've been trying to do it on our own this year, and have just gotten to the Boston Tea Party! I'd like to be ready for AH2 next year. Your posts made me even more excited about WP! Thanks!
