March 8, 2008 - Jimmy the Skunk is Available at Librivox

Maybe this isn't headline news at your home, but it is here! The Adventures of Jimmy Skunk is now complete and available for free download at Librivox! (Why does the skunk have to have my name? Why can't Jimmie be a cute chipmonk or a sweet calling bird?)

Sprite has discovered the delight of Thornton W. Burgess. We've listened to his Bird Book and Animal Book, and The Adventures of Buster Bear. These nature tales are great supplements to your Charlotte Mason styled nature study.  And when you listen to the MP3s, YOU can be doing something else besides reading. I love that! And you know that listening to a story like this is far superior to watching any kind of television or movie.

Librivox has MP3 files of other Thornton W. Burgess's books. (Sorry, this link also brings books by another author with the last name of Burgess. Just look at the bottom of the list.) And texts of many more can be found at Main Lesson.

I read most of Burgess's books when I was a child. I have great memories of lying on the porch swing, reading about Mother Nature and her woodlands creatures. These stories are so different from modern stories. They are slow, gentle, and filled with tidbits about nature. Enjoy!

Very great site. We are listening to Tom Swift books (which speak to my 10 year old son) there. I will have to check out the Burgess books as well.
