March 16, 2008 - Jamestown 3D Model and Neat Connections

That amazing story returned to England and inspired Shakespeare's The Tempest!
(Guess which Shakespeare play we'll be reading this week?) Wow! Isn't it wonderful when all that you're studying just fits together like that?

I never realised that Shakespear and the settling of America were contemporaries!! So cool what you learn while you are 'teaching', huh?

How long have you used WP as your curriculum? You seem pleased with it. Is it all encompassing or do you have to add in some subjects? I'd love to hear your experience with it.

You are really making WP sound fun ... gonna have to save up so we can do it sometime.
I've been to Jamestown .... the ruins are cool and this wild deer just about plowed us over ... my son hid behind me ((I think he was 22 months old)) and I hid behind my mom, LOL
I've got camera footage somewhere of our trip ... maybe I can get it converted to dvd and upload some of it one of these days.

I love when things work out like that. We've studied Jamestown, but I didn't realize there was a connection between The Tempest and Jamestown. There's always so much more to learn!

March 19, 2008 - Winter Promise vs Sonlight
Posted by Anonymous
I love the fun projects you all are doing. We are using Sonlight curriculum right now and love all the great literature. However, we would love a few more hands on activities. How do you think the two curriculums compare? Do you have a preference? Do you think one is stronger academically? Thanks,
Jennie
March 19, 2008 - WP vs. SL
Posted by Jimmie
Jennie, I hope you come back for the answer! Yes, the projects are terribly fun and engaging for Sprite and me!
Do I have a preference between SL & WP? Well, we used SL for K, 1 & 2. And I loved it. It was/is a great curriculum. But I realized that my daughter needed/wanted more hands-on. We always added lapbooking, and I researched other activities. I wanted something that would do the legwork for me so I didn't have to. Voila -- WP!
Other things about my daughter led me to think that SL Core 3 would be too large of a jump for her. Emotionally the SL books are very heart rending. We live abroad and see poverty, injustice, etc. daily. We don't need to read about it. We live among it. Maybe some suburban kids need that. We don't. Althought the books are GREAT, it's hard to see your child SOB during the reading times. Something has got to change!
WP is really more gentle. I like that. No tears so far with WP books.
Stronger academically? No. I feel they are very comparable. They are both living books based. WP is a slightly more gentle, (actually on grade level rather than SL's advanced level), more hands-on curriculum.
It's a good fit for us right now.
I hope that helps you!
Jimmie

Thank you so much for your response. That helps me tremendously. Both my son and daughter are using SL right now. However, she loves hands-on type activities and she is also very sensitive. Your review truly helped. Thank you. Your blog has been a tremendous help to me in my first year of homeschooling. Thank you!

We did that project, too. And, we just ordered our WP, AS1! So, we can't wait to get it and get started.
I think I read about The Tempest being based on this event - wish I would have thought to read it with my daughter. What book do you use?
