April 19, 2008 - Nature Study -- Turtles

We are in Hong Kong renewing our visas and taking care of some other business. We're trying hard to make the most of our time here when in reality we would rather be home in China.

Nature walks are always something I have to be very deliberate about. Being away from home in an urban area makes it even harder! But it is true that nature is all around you. We found an oasis of animal life in an unlikely place -- a pool of turtles in an apartment courtyard!

In Chinese culture, turtles are a symbol of long life (since they do, in fact, live long lives) and are commonly used in feng shui along with goldfish. But we don't go in for superstitious ideas. We simply like to enjoy God's creation.

I packed my Handbook of Nature Study, and back at home we read the part about  turtles. Although we couldn't precisely identify our kind of turtle from the handbook, we did learn some interesting facts! Sprite drew the turtle from a photograph I'd taken. For the nature journal, I gave her a list of key words from what we'd read in the Handbook of Nature Study. She had to include those words in her journal entry.

So, be encouraged. Nature is all around you! Keep looking for it.

what a great study! I love how you incorporate notebooking and photos into your studies. It really helps us homeschool mom's visualize the topic. Turtles are amazing!!!

You're in Hong Kong and doing a nature study! LOL You are so good. Thanks for showing me a practical way to use that Handbook. I haven't opened it since I read Pocketful of Pinecones over 2 years ago!

Hi!! I have been meaning to tell you I made your chicken croquetts and they were a hit here. My husband kept saying, "this is a fun meal". I think it was a meal that reminded of us home. Then I read your blog today and see you are visiting here. How exciting! Okay, I know you would rather be home. Yuck, you got hit with all the rain. Enjoy your stay.

Nature is all around us! We had the same experience when we were travelling around Saudi recently. Hope everything went well with your visa run. I know how it is. I love how you were still able to do school. I will have to start doing that when we're on the road. Thanks for that post!

There is something magical about a turtle. They are so clumsy on land but they are so graceful in the water. I love Sprite's drawing in her nature journal.

We love to take our nature study on the road. I have the HNS loaded on my laptop so I can tap into it wherever we are. Always some little tidbit to learn even if the exact animal or plant isn't in there.

Thanks for the glimpse into your traveling nature study.

Yes, nature is all around us. And your dd seems to appreciate the finer things in life, God's creation.

I absolutely adore you, Jimmie!

I just finished reading Pocketful of Pinecones by Karen Andreola, and while I found it to be a delightful book and gleaned so much from it, I couldn't help but think the entire time I was reading it, that these are the same kinds of things I learn reading your blog. This post is a prime example. You take all the intimidation out of nature studies and inspire me to be more observant and take the initiative to do this kind of thing with my own kids!

You're a gem! Have a lovely day!

Grace and Peace,
Angel

May 3, 2008 - Nature journaling

Posted by 318sunday

I have just finished reading a Charlotte Mason companion, and a friend of mine sent me to your squidoo website about nature journaling. We began journaling this week. I added you to my friends list so I could watch what you are doing and 'copy'. The boys have had so much fun doing it this week!
