April 22, 2008 - Hong Kong Disney -- It's a Small World
On our second day at HK Disney, we had a special treat! The It's a Small World ride was open for testing! So we were some of the first people ever to ride this classic Disney ride! It was so fun to see a segment on the evening news about the upcoming opening of this ride that we'd already ridden!

It was much better than the one in FL. It was much more multicultural (natural for an international place like Hong Kong). The song was sung in three different languages through the ride. The Asia section was much larger and more attractive than that in FL. And some of the classic Disney characters were incorporated into the display -- Mowgli in India, Cinderella in Europe, Jasmine and Aladin in the Middle East, etc.

And look at this wait time... can you believe it? Five minutes for It's a Small World? I don't think I can ever enjoy American Disney again. I've been utterly and totally spoiled!

Several of you asked about the Disney characters being Americans or Asians. Well, under those costumes, I have no idea, of course! The ones with huge masks on don't speak at all. So I had no clue whatsoever.
But the princesses were all Anglo not Asian. I don't know where they were from. They sounded (from their English) like North Americans, but of course, you can't ask Belle "Where are you from?" I mean, everyone knows Belle is from France!

Well, to be perfectly fair to the FL version of It's a Small World, it is much, much older than the Hong Kong version. :)
It looks like y'all had a wonderful time. I am very jealous of the wait times for the rides there. That would definitely spoil me!

The one here in FL looks like that now. It has all that clock work and such but inside, not outside...
Sounds like you had a great time. I'm going to pass your blog onto my girls so they can see .. they love Disney..

I love these posts. I did the same last week with Knott's Berry Farm and our little vacation. Love photos!!! I wanted to remind you that tomorrow is Weblink Wednesday at my blog if your interested. Always good homeschooling links available - you can even participate if you wish, too. OH, I can't seem to find how to post the links for your own website. Can you give me a direct link and a brief discription so I can copy/paste the info and put it on my site? Thanks.

I have never been to Disney World in FL. I used to dream about it, but I have a better chance of going to Hong Kong! (lol) Your pictures look awesome.

I will not go to Hong Kong just for Disney... I will not go to Hong Kong just for Disney...
If I ever go to Hong Kong, please make sure I'm not going just for Disney... because that would be like completely ridiculous. Right?

Looks like you guys had a blast! I told my husband that if we're ever in Hong Kong (not that we're currently planning it, but if ever) that we should plan on a Disney visit. With wait times and prices like the ones you're talking about, why not?? Sounds like a blast!

Disneyland has updated the ride as well and I am going to be one of the ones that is totally impressed with this refurbishment. The addition of the characters is subtle and allows a new generation of Disney fans to relate to the attraction.
From what I have seen, Alice and the White Rabbit were added to England, Pumbaa and Simba were added to Africa, Aladdin and Jasmine were added to Arabia, Arial and Flounder were added to the Undersea scene, Marlin and Dori were added to Australia's scene, Lilo and Stitch are now in Hawaii, it appears that Cinderella, Gus and Jack the mice were added right next to the France scene (Ratatouille would have been more appropriate), Pinocchio and the song "When you wish upon a star" is incorporated perfectly into the soundtrack, Mulan and Mushu were added to Japan, Woody, Bullseye and Jessie now have a place in the new America scene. I have heard that Pocahontas was also added, but I didn't see her.
It was incredible what they've done, I will be able to appreciate it all over again!
