As a follow up to my post on laundry in China, here is one about laundry in Hong Kong. It's a similar situation, but as with everything in Hong Kong, more tidy and more tiny.
We are staying in a very small apartment here in Hong Kong. It's wonderful to have our own place. And although it's super-duper tiny, it's still much bigger than a hotel room, and we can cook and do laundry.

This photo was taken from our tiny laundry room/closet. You can see the neighbor's laundry out to dry on a nifty rack. I do notice that the unmentionables (which Chinese folks right across the border will hang to dry on any nearby tree ) are not seen here on the 16th floor rack. Hong Kong people are more modest, it seems. I like that.

And here are more of the same kinds of racks on the apartments across the courtyard. The clothes are hung on ropes which are on pulleys and can be pulled back and forth.

And looking straight down from the window -- just to give you perspective. Those big black tubes are the holders for the rack for our apartment (if we had one).
I'm guessing that if you use this method of drying your clothes, skimping on the cheap clothespins wouldn't really be a worth it. And in case you're wondering, we are using a washer and dryer. I don't dare hang my clothes out the window on the 16th floor. I can just imagine the security guard knocking on my door with an armful of MY garments covered in tire tracks.
