June 10, 2008 - Sketching Bridges Like Monet

When you're coming to the end of your artist study of Monet, you can't pass by a scene like this one without making a reference to the Japanese bridge at Giverny. I was thrilled when Sprite asked if we could sketch it just like Monet did.

She happened to get a bit sidetracked by some children who kept peering over her shoulder, so she spent most of her time like this.

Sprite drawing a portrait

And here is her finished portrait sketch. I thought it was fabulous! Even more so, I was proud of her attitude. She said as we were walking home that some people said her art was good. Others said it was bad. Some said it was so so. She laughed as she realized that everyone has a different opinion (which they seem to feel so very free to openly express) and that it made no difference to her what they thought. She was drawing for herself, not for them. (As a side note, she is not always so confident. But I was thrilled to hear this from her that day!)

I reminded her that those people more than likely would never risk drawing in public for fear of the kinds of comments she received. But then again, they will never know the joy of relaxing with pencil in hand before a lovely view, the satisfaction of working over a particular curve or line, the joy of being an artist. We are artists if we create art, no matter the results or the opinion of others.

I think sprite did a wonderful job. It is a shame when people are negative and have to try and bring others down.

Tell Sprite Em gets comments too...hers are from kids who cannot figure out why she likes to examine pond water, take photos, and draw . We do this at our neighborhood park and it always attracts a crowd of kids. Your photos are precious! And the bridge could not be more perfect for Monet!

Great job. Looking forward to seeing you. Does she need a trip to Spotlight for some pencils?

I think she did a really great job! And, I think it is great that she was so confident when others were telling her they didn't like it. And, I just love that she "asked" to draw like Monet! :-) It's a beautiful bridge, too.

I love her drawing! Just the right amount of detail to flesh it out and not overwhelm!

Even more though, I love her sweet spirit to take distractions as they come and adapt her subject to accomodate them! How wonderful that she drew the children instead of just the bridge. (That bridge scene is lovely, by the way!)

And I love her confidence, and willingess to let her art stand independent of other's opinions! (Especially of opinions of people who don't happen to have a sketch pad of their own in hand.) ;)

Beautiful, Sprite!

(something is wrong with my homeschoolblogger account so I can't log in for some reason)

Please give Sprite a hug for me and tell that I am soooo very proud of not only her drawing but her attitude. I think instead of Sprite you should call her Spunky because she definitely has spunk. :)

I am going to be linking to your entry...it is a keeper.

I couldn't agree with your last paragraph more.

Well, I'm with her. I BLOG for myself, so it does give one a certain amount of confidence. You've done such a great job with teaching her about the masters!

Lovely sketch!

While I love to draw and paint, it is one area that I am not very confident in... I don't know if I would have the courage to create like that in public. What a wonderful teachable moment for her-- and FUN!!!

Wonderful drawing, and even better attitude!
Thanks for the warning; that happened to someone I know, too. Fortunately I have copied and moved all my posts so it won't be a big deal for me if it happens. But I will miss your comments! :-)

What a great experience!
My daughter was drawing with watercolor pencils the other day and on a whim I asked if I could join her (not a usual occurance). All the other kids gathered around watching us draw oohing and ahhing. At one point, my eldest daughter said, "See Mom, you are artistic. Sure, if you compare my sunset to the average 8 year old. ;) It was fun though, and I realized that I need to do more things like that with the kids.

That is a beautiful drawing she made. That is awesome that she was so confident to be drawing for herself.

Hi Jimmie,

This is lovely! I have two daughters who are natural drawers, we're working on the other one!
Thankyou for your kind comments on my blog re the artist study group. Now I can put a face to the name and realise I've seen your comments on some of the outdoor hour challenges too and have also visited your blog before.
All the best,
Rachael.
