August 6, 2008 - Torching Pigs' Feet
I've lived here six years and this is the first time I've seen this... what to call it.. cooking technique? Food preparation technique? Butchering method?

In case you're not sure what you're seeing, let me help you. to the right you have a stack of pigs' feet. In the chair you have a restaurant manager, getting ready for the day. He's using a gas torch to sear the skin and burn off the hair from the pigs' feet. Obviously that black rock is his special pig torching platform. To the left is a big pan of water where the torched pigs' feet go for a final scrub before they are cooked.

By the way, this is at the bus stop on a sidewalk outside the restaurant where we were waiting for our bus.

He added baking soda to the water and scrubbed each pig's foot with a metallic scrubber. Voila! Clean pigs' feet.

Yes, she's a China girl, but she still found this sight pretty gross.

Not one I've actually seen before, but something that doesn't surprise me. My husband is Chinese...I've seen his kinsman doing some pretty strange things. This one doesn't make me blink twice. (Incidently-my dad says burning is good for removing pinfeathers from fowl so why not hair from pigs feet?) I think it's the public nature of what he's doing that makes one go hmmm????
Question about living in China....do you find it difficult to buy clothing for you, your husband or daughter? We Americans are not really built like the average Chinese. Hubs went home 2 years ago and had a very difficult time finding a size that would fit him...and he's small by american standards ( a size M-L shirt, 32x32 pants.) Everyone said he had gotten fat! He also brought some things home for our girls which were pretty hit or miss. Just curious what your experience has been.

The picture of Sprite was worth the whole post....it made me laugh outloud. Pig's feet are something I don't even want to ask about. :)

Yeah, Sprite. Exactly what I was thinking. Ugh!
Do you see how dirty that sidewalk is? I'm so glad he put it in the pan of soda water so the germs had time to soak into all the meat. Ofcourse, they ARE pig feet. Not like they've never been in anything dirty before.
Why don't you add some of these to you're pig picture lens. Then we could all vote on the GROSSEST pig picture. LOL!
