September 19, 2008 - Ants Nature Study

We've finally gotten back into the swing of nature walks. This week our focus was inspired by Sprite's current read-- Christian Liberty Press's Nature Reader. The material on ants is very engaging and offers enough mystery that you want to go outdoors and actually see what you're reading. So we did. Ants. How easy can it get? Ants are truly everywhere! And they are fascinating!

As the book suggested, we made a makeshift ant farm with a small glass jar. I'd never done that, and didn't think it would work. But our jar is small enough that we can see the ants building tunnels and carrying food down them. It's quite interesting. We keep it covered with black paper when we're not studying the ants.

And for recording our observations, I made some notebooking pages which you can access at my page at HSLaunch. Here's Sprite's completed page:

I love those Christian Liberty Press's Nature Readers! In fact they have a lot of neat books, especially the vintage reprints(my fav).

I LOVE your new look! Don't know when it happened, but I am just coming back from a summer break and had to come and see what you are up too. Again, I love the look!

What a neat project you are doing. We have an ant hill in our yard and the kids really enjoy watching the ants crawl around.

Blessings,

What fun. My kids had an ant jar for about a week this summer. They thought it was lots of fun. I am happy to report that they didn't escape in the house.
Blessings,
Dawn

Oh I am so excited to read about this! Emme is reading the same CLP Nature Reader -- I will show her Sprite and the ant jar and this weekend encourage her to do the same! (She's a little prissy when it comes to bugs! LOL)

Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!

Thanks for stopping by my blog on the BATW tour to New Zealand. I'm fascinated by what you are doing, you can tell you are making the most of living in a foreign land. My own experience of China is limited to about 5 business trips to Bejing and other assorted provincial towns meeting with University personnel. I loved my trips but now need to go back and see the country from a less frenetic business perspective.

You asked if the picture on my blog header is my house. I'm afraid to say it is in case you die but I'm afraid it is!

We came to New Zealand with a key purpose to by land in the country and build a house. We could have gone for some more modern architecture but when we found the land we wanted to buy it just didn't seem right to put anything other than a colonial style building. People relocate old house here but ours was built from scratch and whilst it has the old style charm it has all mod cons - solar water heating, insulation, digital wiring etc. It's very cool and I fell thankful everyday we've been able to live our dream.

I shall definitely be back to follow your blog's progress - love the makeover by the way. I'm with you on the DIY design philosophy.

Yes, ants are everywhere! Great post as usual. I need to get back outdoors too, before it is too cold.

How fun! Ants are indeed fascinating. And a good example too (I often have to tell quote the Proverbs to myself, "Go to the ant, thou sluggard")

I'm confused on the pepper: You cover the entire jar in black pepper?

Enjoy ant watching!

September 20, 2008 - Ant Farm

Last summer we did the ant farm in a jar thing too. I was probably the one most excited about it (this is usually how it goes ha ha) It was amazing to see in smaller scale how they do their jobs and what it looks like. Those ants are relentless little tunnel diggers hey!
Have Fun!

ROFLOL! How funny, PAPER! What was wrong with my eyes? What was wrong with my brain? I think my brain is full of scrambled eggs.

black paper. Of course.

I'll be laughing at myself about that one all day!

Awesome! We just love critter studies. I have a new post on the blog about butterflies and spiders that Sprite might like to see.

I'll have to tell my sister in law about this. My three year old neice is crazy about bugs. Currently they have pet catterpillars and earthworms. Her favorite bedtime storybook is an insect field guide.

That looks like an easy science project that we could do, we have millions of ants on our property!
I will check out your pages too.
